KUALA LUMPUR: The Rukun Negara pledge will be recited by Members of Parliament at the start of every new Dewan Rakyat meeting, says Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

"This will be done on the second day before proceedings begin," he said before the start of proceedings in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 29).

He said the decision followed a recent request by National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang for the Rukun Negara to be recited in Parliament.

"The request was for the full Rukun Negara pledge to be recited which involves the preamble and the five principles.

"This was referred to the Special Select Committee on Nation Building, Education and Human Resources Development and Special Committee of House Rules, with both agreeing to the proposal," he added.

The Rukun Negara was formulated following the May 13, 1969 incident, and forms the basis of all government policies and activities to ensure Malaysia is peaceful and harmonious.

There have been recent efforts by the government to promote the Rukun Negara among Malaysians.

In August, Rukun Negara Exploration activities were launched to coordinate recitation of the pledge in every school and official government programme across the country.

It begins with the full reading of the preamble (mukadimah), followed by the five principles, to instil loyalty and love for the country.
