PUTRAJAYA: It is important to recognise the fundamental role of the family given current “megatrends” influencing the institution, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said megatrends such as migration, urbanisation, advancements in technology, demographic shifts and climate change are affecting families globally.

She said such changes call for flexible caregiving arrangements and updated financial plans.

“The influence of technology on families encompasses both opportunities and challenges. In an increasingly interconnected and fast-paced world, families face numerous complex issues that require innovative solutions and collaborative efforts,” said Nancy.

“By leveraging technology, confronting climate change, and adapting to demographic shifts, we aim to bolster resilience and inclusivity,” she added in her speech during the International Forum on Families and Megatrends here on Thursday (Feb 29).

The Santubong MP also highlighted the importance of understanding the connections between major trends that are affecting families and the impact of megatrends on family dynamics.

She said examining the connections will lead to the development of knowledgeable policies and strategies that could support and strengthen families in the face of ongoing societal transformations.

“This year, the world will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the International Year of Family (IYF) 2024. This milestone serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of families in our society and the need to continue championing their well-being and empowerment,” she added.
