MULU: The Sarawak government is looking to address the needs of its rural communities through funding allocations under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and the Minor Rural Project (MRP), the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak's Department Datuk Gerawat Gala emphasised the government's ongoing support for residents wishing to construct new longhouses.

"The RTP and MRP allocations are distributed to each representative to develop their respective areas.

"Although the funds are not disbursed all at once, they are provided continuously as needed," Gala said during the groundbreaking ceremony for a new longhouse at Kampung Engkaras on April 16.

The assemblyman for Mulu said that in the Puyut Lubuk Nibung area alone, 22 projects for new longhouses are underway, with 12 currently in construction and 10 completed.

"All these are supported by the Sarawak Government through allocations to the representatives of the Mulu constituency, aimed at alleviating the burden of the residents who wish to build new longhouses given the high cost of materials," he added.

Gala also called for solid support and close cooperation with the longhouse chiefs to ensure effective and systematic administration within the longhouses. He urged the residents to adhere to the Iban customs and traditions in constructing longhouses to ensure that the homes remain safe, prosperous, and progressive.
