Govt to spend RM400 million on maintenance of military housing

KUALA KUBU BAHARU: The government has allocated RM400 million for the maintenance of Rumah Keluarga Angkatan Tentera (RKAT) nationwide.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the money as for the upkeep of 28,808 housing units in 48 camps.

The allocation, he said, aligned with the government's commitment to ensuring the welfare of military personnel.

"The government is fully committed to this cause, as we deeply appreciate the sacrifices and contributions made by our armed forces in safeguarding the nation's security and sovereignty," he said during after visiting RKAT Taman Seruling, here.

RKAT is an affordable housing programme from the Armed Forces Fund Board for military personnel and their families.

During the visit, Khaled inspected the condition of military housing and interacted with military personnel.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by military families, including issues such as unsafe living conditions and leaky roofs.

A total of RM596,283 was allocated to RKAT Taman Seruling for maintenance works.

"The government aims to complete all repairs within two months, starting next month.

"Overall, the repairs RKAT Taman Seruling involves 245 units, comprising 11 officers' houses, 28 non-commissioned officers' quarters, and 206 other ranks.

"Only 73 houses are in good condition, 60 are damaged but still inhabited, 59 are damaged and unsuitable for occupancy, and 53 units have been approved for demolition."

Among the maintenance that will be done are roofing, electrical wiring and equipment, and interior paint.

After the visit, Khaled handed to Major-General Datuk Reizal Arif a mock cheque of the funds to be used for the repairs at RKAT Taman Seruling.
