KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is planning an aerospace hub with potential revenue that could surpass that of the oil and gas sector, says a state minister.

If all goes well, the Sabah International Aerospace Launch Centre and Industrial Park is expected to be completed within five years, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif (pic) said on Thursday (April 25).

He added that a feasibility study was being conducted in collaboration with the Malaysia Space Agency (MYSA).

"This industry shows potential to substantially boost the state's revenue, potentially outpacing that of the oil and gas sector," he said in his winding-up speech at the state assembly sitting here.

He said Sabah's strategic location made it a cost-effective choice for industry players given the rapid expansion of the aerospace market globally.

"Establishing an aerospace hub has the potential to generate a wide array of employment opportunities, encompassing roles ranging from professional to vocational and technical positions.

"It would have a positive impact on the local aerospace industry and logistics sector," he said.

In addition, the ministry was also looking into setting up a Sabah Geospatial Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Data Centre to assess research and development requirements within the STI domain.

"This data centre will function as a crucial platform for sharing strategic information among agencies, ensuring efficient resource utilisation in accordance with policies and regulations.

"It will play a pivotal role in helping the government make sustainable decisions pertinent to Sabah's specific needs and potentials," Ariffin added.
