KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Joachim Gunsalam said that legal reforms were crucial for enhancing the efficiency of service delivery to the people.

Speaking at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday, Gunsalam, who is also Housing and Local Government Minister, highlighted that drafting and amending laws to carry out duties effectively would remain a top priority for the ministry.

"Strengthening laws and introducing new ones to replace or amend certain clauses is essential to ensure better efficiency among agencies and local authorities in Sabah when fulfilling their responsibilities to the people," he said during the conclusion of debates on the motion of thanks to the policy speech by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

Gunsalam also said that several laws were currently under review by the State Attorney General's office.

Notably, laws related to the Town Planning and Village Ordinance, Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Rules 2008, Building Management Enactment, Uniform Hotel, Lodging & Short Term Accommodation (STA) by-laws, Waste Management, and Public Cleanliness Enactment 2020 are among those receiving attention.

"The ministry is also focusing on enhancing the integrity of all the 25 local government authorities and agencies under its purview in Sabah," he said, emphasising the importance of improving governance and commitment to eradicating corruption.
