IPOH: Muslims in the country should refrain from boycotting establishments such as KK Super Mart because the act departs from the concept of Islamic jurisprudence, said Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Zahidi Wan Teh.

He said in a statement on Friday (May 3) that the principle of universal justice was sacred in Islam and it was the right of all creeds unconditionally.

"From the explanation by KK Super Mart and also their open apology plus their explanation to the Malaysia Islamic Development Department, it is clear that motive and intention in this case is unproven.

"Hence, based on Islamic jurisprudence, accusations of insulting Islam against KK Super Mart are unproven," Wan Zahidi added.

"When the issue was sensationalised and fomented sentiments of anger and hatred, the way it was handled had strayed far from the principles of Islamic justice for all," he added.

Wan Zahidi was commenting on a public call to boycott KK Super Mart since March after socks bearing the word "Allah" were found at its branch in Bandar Sunway, Selangor.

Meanwhile, Perlis Mufti Prof Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, said while Muslim consumers can choose to refrain from buying the goods and services of certain brands amid the Gaza conflict, they must not vandalise the property of those companies.

Citing an Islamic utterance, Prof Mohd Asri stated that those who commit such acts were deemed to have sin and the punishment would be equal to the amount of damaged caused.

He was commenting on a spate of spray paint defacement in several states recently on the billboards and outlets of several foreign brands.

Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor also called on Muslims to moderate their decision to boycott certain foreign brands.

He said acts of vandalism and damaging the property of others were strictly forbidden in Islam and defined as sins in many passages in the Quran.
