KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has reminded the public to understand and appreciate the true meaning and purpose of Hari Merdeka celebration.

He said independence is not merely about gaining freedom from colonial rule or chanting the slogan 'Merdeka!' but rather, it requires the sacrifice of spirit and mind, nurtured through the development of identity in four key aspects, namely, religion, morality, education, and language.

"The nation needs its people, composed of various races and religions, to unite in forming a strong and harmonious society based on the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara," Sultan Sharafuddin said in a statement issued in conjunction with the National Day 2024 celebration.

He urged all citizens to take responsibility for fostering harmony and unity without poisoning minds with negative elements, especially those related to the 3R issues (race, religion, and royalty).

Sultan Sharafuddin said the royal institution should not be dragged into slander and accusations related to political issues, as the institution is above politics.

He said any criticism should be voiced through proper channels and with caution.

"I often advise leaders and politicians to avoid inciting hatred in politics, but unfortunately, this negative culture is still practised by some.

"However, I will not relent from advising all citizens to nurture a strong spirit of unity within society," he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin said differences in race, religion, and political beliefs should not hinder Malaysians' loyalty to the country as he believed these differences should be seen as the recipe for creating a united and respectful multicultural society.

He called for prudent efforts to organize programs that can bridge divides and eliminate any negative prejudices in the hearts of some citizens.

"Avoid all practices of jealousy, slander, incitement, and provocation that can damage the unity of the people.

Let us all pray that the people of this beloved country can live in peace and harmony," he said.

Additionally, he urged the younger generation to be wise in facing and resolving future challenges.

He said they are the nation's hope and are exposed to new forms of colonialism that influence thinking and culture, particularly with the rapid advancement of information technology and social media.

Sultan Sharafuddin said that a patriotic spirit, tolerance, and mutual respect must continue to be instilled in the younger generation, manifesting in strong unity, enduring harmony, and freedom from negative elements.

"I am confident that by appreciating the true meaning of independence, the spirit of love for the country will be rekindled, shaping a progressive and advanced nation," he said.
