Chartered Accountant, Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountant England and Wales, Associate Member of Certified Public Accountant Malaysia, Member of Malaysian Institute of Accountants and a Registered Accountant, also a Fellowship of the Institute of Bankers Malaysia.
Working Experience
After qualifying in 1974, he joined the Malayan Banking Group as a Manager at Mayban Finance Berhad. In 1976, he was appointed the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of the finance company until 1979 and was transferred to Maybank Berhad. Between 1979 and 1985 he served in many different capacities in the bank and his last post at Maybank was as General Manager and Head of Domestic Banking for southern zone.
In September 1985, he was appointed as Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Perwira Habib Bank as nominees of Bank Negara Malaysia. The objective of the appointment was to turn around the Bank which at that time had suffered substantial losses.
In 1992, he was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB) and left in June 1993. Between 1993 and 1995, he served as Executive Vice Chairman at UAC Berhad. In June 1995, he returned to Affin Bank Berhad as Deputy Chairman/Chief Executive Officer and served until May 2003. He has been actively involved in turning around Affin Bank Berhad to profitability, restructuring debts of numerous companies of various sizes and rehabilitating them. Throughout his banking career, he was actively involved in promoting bumiputra executives in the bank and bumiputra entrepreneurs. It is recognised that he was actively involved in nurturing many bumiputra entrepreneurs. Presently, he is on the Board of Affin Merhcant Bank, Affin-ACF Finance and Affin Holdings Berhad.
During the financial crisis in 1980, he served on the Panel of Tabung Pemulihan Usahawan and the Tabung Pemulihan Perumahan Terbengkalai. Since 1st March 1996, he served as a Member of the Investment Panel for the Pension Fund and was appointed a Member of the Investment Panel for Employee Provident Fund in 2002 and retired in 2003. He also served as Honorary Treasurer for Yayasan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim and as Trustee for Yayasan Tuanku Bainum and Malaysia Hockey Federation.
During his 28 years in the banking industry, he was responsible for pioneering a number of banking activities such as the computerisation of Malayan Banking Berhad, the introduction of credit card and automated teller machine (ATM), introduction of bridging loan and end-financing for house buyers. He was active in turning around numerours medium size companies in the 1980s and thus saved many bumiputra companies and bumiputra businessmen from liquidation and bankruptcies.
