An Accountant by training and was admitted as an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, United Kingdom in 1972 and has since become a Fellow of the Institute.

1. During nearly three decades of service with the Government, in the Accountant General Service, he served in various Governmental departments/ units either as an accountant or treasurer. 2. He began his career as an Accountant with Jabatan Telekom Malaysia in 1972. Later, during the same year, he joined the Ministry of Trade and Industry and was subsequently transferred to the Ministry of Works as Senior Accountant. 3. He moved to the Ministry of Health in 1975 as Financial Controller and thereafter served with the Ministry of Finance between 1976 and 1980 as Deputy Manager (Financial Management Unit). 4. In 1980, he was seconded to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as the Bursar and moved to the Ministry of Education in 1983 as chief accountant. Subsequently, he was seconded to the International Islamic University as the university's treasurer. 5. In 1987, he was transferred to the Economic Planning Unit (FIC Division) as senior accountant before being seconded to the Employees' Provident Fund Board as senior manager (Investment) in 1988. 6. In 1992, he returned to the Accountant General's Department as corporate director and was subsequently promoted to deputy accountant general in the same year. He became the accountant general in 1994 and served in that capacity (subsequently on a contract basis) until his retirement in year 2000. 7. He was appointed as Independent Non-Executive Director of Pos Malaysia & Services Holdings Berhad on 2 February 2001.
