PETALING JAYA: AIRASIA BHD resumed its scheduled domestic flights in Malaysia yesterday but is looking to cut cost aggressively and not take delivery of any aircraft this year.
The airline will start flying to selected international destinations soon subject to the approval of the authorities.
Its planned flight resumptions include Thailand on May 1, the Philippines on May 16 and Indonesia on May 7.
Executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said AirAsia expected its initiatives on bringing down its cost of operations would result in the company saving 30% of its cost this year.
Among the cost-cutting measures are plans not to take any new aircraft deliveries this year and its target is to end 2020 with 242 aircraft.
“This is a net reduction of one aircraft from last year. We are (also) relooking at our orderbook with Airbus, ” Kamarudin said in a statement.
“The decision to sell and lease our aircraft in late 2018 has provided us greater flexibility to scale back growth than owning aircraft today. We were also able to lock in the best price for those aircraft at prime market conditions while eliminating the residual risk of owning aircraft.”
He said the company has also restructured a major portion of fuel hedges with its supportive counterparties and is in the process of restructuring the remaining exposure.
“This will help deal with the excess of hedged volume against expected fuel consumption post- Covid-19 and reduce the hedging losses if fuel price remains at today’s prices.
“Further measures in managing and containing costs include both the management and senior employees of the AirAsia Group volunteering a salary sacrifice, re-negotiating contracts and deferring all non-essential expenditures, ” Kamarudin said.
All AirAsia flights, going forward, will adhere to strict health controls and social distancing protocol are in place, in compliance with the regulations.
“The resumption of services will initially be for key selected domestic routes, which will increase gradually to include international destinations around the region once the situation improves and governments lift borders and travel restrictions, ” the carrier said.
Kamarudin said the company’s strong foundation, coupled with robust relationships with suppliers and partners, have enabled it to return to service stronger during these challenging times.
“AirAsia works actively with all relevant regulators, local governments, civil aviation and health authorities, and adheres to guidance from the World Health Organisation and International Civil Aviation Organisation to ensure the highest standards of compliance and conformance are in place for every flight we operate in our network, ” he said.
“We will require guests to wear masks and practise universally recommended protective precautionary measures including social distancing and observing high personal hygiene. All our aircraft, which are fitted with hospital-standard High Efficiency Particulate Air filters, will also be sent for a thorough disinfection every night stop, ” he added.
AirAsia said it had participated in a number of recovery flights which are being initiated by governments and private companies during the outbreak period.
This is providing a boost to its charter service, it said.
“Despite the unprecedented environment we are currently in, we are continuing to build on our strengths and especially our brand so as to emerge stronger when normalcy returns.
“We hope to continue to sustain the 1.3 million jobs and counting in the sector in the region, directly and indirectly, and double our economic contribution to Asean’s GDP from US$15.3bil in 2018 to US$35bil in 2030, ” he said.
The statement also said AirAsia would continue with the diversification of its revenue base during this tough period, with a more rigorous and market-friendly approach to further expand its digital and ancillary businesses such as Santan, Teleport and BigPay.
“Teleport is prioritising the transport of medical supplies to frontliners and emergency medical responders and have been operating a number of chartered flights, especially for cargo shipment, ” he said.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Low-cost carrier AirAsia is set to reopen the Indonesia-Malaysia flight routes on May 18, 2020, after they were temporarily suspended in the wake of the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are opening the routes to Malaysia because of the improving condition there, the number of cases is showing a downward trend,” said AirAsia Indonesia CEO Veranita Yosephine Sinaga during an online discussion on Monday, May 4.
The plan has been discussed with the regulators or the Malaysian government, Veranita added. Hence, the company decided to operate the flights of Surabaya-Kuala Lumpur-Surabaya and Surabaya-Johor Baru-Surabaya.
She explained that following the reactivation of the flight routes amid the ongoing pandemic her corporate pledged the COVID-19 protocols and security would be carried out strictly. “Which are adjusted to AirAsia Indonesia’s standards and policies set by the government,” she underlined.
The corporate would also conduct periodic evaluations after the reopening of the international flight routes, she added.
As for the reopening of domestic routes, Veranita said her side was still awaiting the decision of the Transportation Ministry. “In principle, we are waiting for the government’s guidance. We have been coordinating and communicating with the Transportation DG and INACA regarding this matter,” she added.
Previously reported, AirAsia suspended 96 percent of its flights following the coronavirus pandemic. The operational halt has subsequently taken a severe financial toll on the company. To address the issue, the budget airline made several efforts to survive, such as renegotiating aircraft rental payments and trimming the salary of its employees, including its board of directors.

AirAsia's resumption of domestic flights due to demand
Author: Tan KW | Publish date: Thu, 30 Apr 2020, 4:04 PM
KUALA LUMPUR: The decision to allow AirAsia Group Bhd to resume its domestic flights was made due to demands by the public, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
This decision, he said, was not exclusive to AirAsia as other airlines had also been given the nod to fly domestic flights since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was enforced in March.
"I am sure they (AirAsia) have received the permission (to fly) from the Transport Ministry and besides, as I've announced before, all domestic flights have been operating from the Subang Airport.
"Firefly and Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) have been operating its domestic flights all this while and since they only fly to Sabah and Sarawak once a week, the additional flights by AirAsia will be able to cater to the demands.
"We received many requests from the public and now, we will have additional flights to cater to all," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
Although there will be additional flights for Malaysians to travel domestically, Ismail Sabri reminded that as long as the MCO was still in place, people must follow the existing standard operating procedure (SOP).
"All SOPs remain the same. You must have the permission slip from the police in order to fly and if you go to Sarawak, as usual, you will have to go through the compulsory 14-day quarantine," he said.
Yesterday, AirAsia executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said that the low-cost carrier would resume its scheduled domestic flights in Malaysia.
He said it would then be followed with Thailand on April 30, Indonesia on May 7 and the Philippines on May 16.
Kamarudin said the resumption of services would initially be for key selected domestic routes, to be increased gradually.
This, he said, would include international destinations around the region once the situation improved and various governments lifted borders and travel restrictions.
AirAsia and its long-haul arm AirAsia X Bhd grounded most of their fleet and suspended flights on March 28 as travel demand dropped due to the Covid-19 outbreak and cross-border travel restrictions.

Ismail Sabri: Domestic flights only half-load with social distancing in place
Author: savemalaysia | Publish date: Sat, 2 May 2020, 5:22 PM
PUTRAJAYA, May 2 — The National Security Council has decided the resumption of domestic flights in the country must follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) of allowing only half-load flights, said Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said, as an example, if an aircraft can accommodate up to 100 passengers, then only 50 will be allowed to board the flight.
“The seating will be similar to that of buses, whereby one person can only occupy two seats due to social distancing. To my knowledge, flights to and from Sabah and Sarawak are still being done by Firefly at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang,” Ismail Sabri said during his daily press conference in Putrajaya.
The minister added that airline operators will also require police permission before conducting domestic flights.
On Wednesday (April 29), low-cost carrier AirAsia Group Berhad resumed its scheduled domestic flights, followed by flights to Thailand on Thursday, to Indonesia on next Thursday (May 7) and to the Philippines on May 16.
The group's executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said the resumption will start with key select domestic routes, and gradually increased to include regional destinations once things have improved and Asean governments decided to reopen their borders and lift travel restrictions.

Boustead Holdings Berhad (MYX: 2771) was founded in 1828 as Boustead & Co in Singapore by Edward Boustead, an English businessman. The company was incorporated in 1961 under the Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges.
After World War II, Malaya declared independence from the British (1957) and Singapore declared independence from Malaysia (1965). This saw Boustead & Co split into three entities in 1975, Boustead Plc in London (which was later reorganized as Boustead & Co), Boustead Holdings Berhad in Malaysia, Boustead Singapore Limited, and Boustead China Co, Ltd.
In 2008, Boustead has 133 subsidiaries of which 3 companies are listed and 16 associate companies, of which one is listed. It has total assets in excess of RM8 billion and more than 18,000 employees. The major shareholder of Boustead today is Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) the Malaysian Armed Forces Pension Fund. The Boustead Group's operations and business activities can be categorised into six core business areas, namely Plantation, Heavy Industries, Property, Finance & Investment, Trading and Manufacturing & Services.
Boustead, through its Boustead Petroleum Marketing subsidiary, is also a major shareholder of BHP Petroleum, a chain of refilling stations inherited from BP in 2005 after BP's pullout from the Malaysian petrol retail business in 2004.[1]

Boustead's pharmaniaga is going to make a lot soon, selling vaccine to hospitals :)
MODERNA Inc., one of the leaders among U.S. companies developing experimental vaccines against the coronavirus, entered a pact with Lonza Group AG aimed at manufacturing 1 billion doses a year.
The companies announced a global agreement under which the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical company will ramp up output of the proposed vaccine, which is based on a novel technology that relies on genetic material called mRNA. The first batches will be produced in the U.S. in July, they said.
The agreement is one of several partnerships being struck between drugmakers as they rush to bring protection against Covid-19 to the market. On Thursday, AstraZeneca Plc announced an agreement to make an experimental coronavirus vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, eyeing production capacity for 100 million doses by the end of the year.
With dozens of projects under way around the world, the Trump administration wants to make shots available for Americans by the end of 2020. Scientists have said it could take longer to have a viable vaccine in place.
Moderna’s experimental shot induces the body’s own cells to make virus-like proteins that stimulate an immune response and prepare for an actual infection. It was one of the first proposed coronavirus vaccines to enter human trials. The company said it plans to begin the next phase of studies this quarter.
The pact with Lonza will enable a tenfold increase in manufacturing, which Moderna has already begun, according to a statement. - Bloomberg

The Armed Forces Fund Board[2] (also commonly known by its Malay name Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera and LTAT in short) is a statutory body which manages the pension fund for certain members of the Malaysian Armed Forces. LTAT was established in August 1972 by the Armed Forces Fund Act (also known as the Tabung Angkatan Tentera Act).[1] The fund is considered the smallest among Malaysian government-linked investment companies,[2][3] and owns controlling stakes in several public listed companies in Malaysia, including Boustead Holdings and Affin Holdings.[2] It is overseen by the Ministry of Defence.[4]
For officers, participation in the fund is voluntary, with no contribution towards their accounts by the Government of Malaysia.[1][5] Armed forces members of other ranks (compulsory contributors) are required to contribute a portion of their monthly salary to LTAT, with the government contributing as employer.[1][5] A compulsory non-pensionable contributor receives his/her retirement benefit in the form of a lump sum payment when he dies (next-of-kin), retires or is discharged from service, or reaches the age of 50.[1][6] A compulsory pensionable contributor receives his/her retirement benefit on his/her death (next-of-kin), retirement or reaching the age of 50 in the form of a lump sum payment of his/her contribution, while the government-contributed portion is transferred to Retirement Fund (Incorporated) (the civil service pension fund) which then administers monthly pension payments.[1][6] Voluntary members may withdraw their contributions at any time.[1][6]
The fund had RM10 billion in assets under management at the end of 2017.[7]

Shahril: “We have taken a very prudent view of the industry because we are looking at a much attenuated turnover over the next few years. Therefore, we have got the auditors to value our assets and the value of the business and we will write off the goodwill of some of our businesses, including some assets to be in line with our business plan and view on where the industry is going, ”
