skyboyman. flight delay is a strategy to make more money. several reasons such as

e.g if the plane landed the airport too early (they might have to pay the airport operator a higer fee). so sometimes pilot will just waste their time on sky by flying no where (buy time)

another senario is to combine flights make sure that the next flight is full.rather pay some compensation (if needed) to save more previous .jet fuel
