AFTER setting a new record of RM4.20 on Aug 4, 2011, budget airline AirAsia Bhd shares slipped into correction mode owing to an apparent profit-taking activity.

It was a typical process initially, but prices deteriorated into a “full-blown” bearish phase later, hit by a combination of factors, such as bad publicity and the recent global markets rout, despite the fact that this counter stand to benefit from the lower crude oil prices.

While persistent liquidation pressured the shares, AirAsia succumbed to tremendous stress to re-test the all-time lows of 76.5 sen on Aug 26 before a fresh bout of buying emerged unexpectedly to lift prices higher.

This stock mended to a one-month high of RM1.28 during intra-day session.

Based on the daily chart, it looks like the worst may be over for this budget airline following the spike in the share price recently, with trading volumes building up, indicating growing investors’ interest.

But what is more significant is that prices had penetrated the 50-day simple moving average line. A positive breakout like this would clear the way for more advances going forward. Also, the “double-bottom” formation on the chart added to our optimism. Elsewhere, the oscillator per cent K and the oscillator per cent D of the daily slow-stochastic momentum index remained strong, despite reaching the top. It had issued a short-term buy on Aug 25.



The 14-day relative strength index firmed from a very oversold single-digit reading of two on Aug 26 to settle at the 80-point level. The daily moving average convergence/divergence histogram rose in tandem with the daily signal line to keep the bullish note. A buy call was triggered on Sept 3.

Technically, indicators are painting a promising landscape, implying AirAsia shares are likely to scale on bullish extended-mode in the immediate term. Initial target is to challenge the RM1.57 barrier or the 100-day simple moving average of RM1.63. The next upper strong hurdle is resting at the RM2-RM2.10 band.
