CIMB Investment Bank takes top spots in RAM's league tables


KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Investment Bank Bhd (CIMB IB), which arranged RM28.13bil or 37.3% of RAM Rating Services' rated private debt securities (PDS) and Sukuk in 2013, took top spots in the rating agency's league tables.
RAM Ratings said on Tuesday CIMB IB took pole position for both Sukuk and conventional PDS for 2013 after it arranged RM28.13bil or 37.3% of the RM75.50bil of RAM-rated PDS and Sukuk last year.

CIMB IB also took top spot for arranging the most Sukuk (by programme value) of RM11bil last year, or 31.3% of the RAM-rated Sukuk.

Maybank Investment Bank Bhd took second spot on both league tables when it arranged RM11.60bil or 15.4% of RAM-rated PDS and Sukuk in 2013. It was also responsible for 15 deals.

Public Investment Bank Bhd was in third place with a programme value of 10bil or 13.2% and AmInvestment Bank Bhd in fourth (RM9.296bil or 12.3%) while in fifth was RHB Investment Bank Bhd (RM7.083bil or 9.4%).

"After an exceptional showing in 2012 that was boosted by several sizeable issues, the Malaysian corporate bond market took a breather last year," it said.

RAM Ratings said based on data from Bond Pricing Agency Malaysia, gross PDS issuance (excluding quasi-government bonds) amounted to RM97.53bil in 2013, which was a decline of 19% on-year (2012: RM120.03bil).

After adjusting for PLUS Bhd's RM23.35bil sukuk and a few other large refinancing exercises in 2012, the bond issuance for 2013 was down 12% on-year.

"Notably, activity in the domestic bond market was hampered by two events last year - the 13th General Election in May, and emerging fears of a scaling back of the US Federal Reserve's quantitative easing programme in July and August," it pointed out.

RAM Ratings said market participants decided to delay their issuances while emerging markets also suffered outflows of foreign capital and steepening yields in the second half of 2013.

However, two significant refinancing exercises in December brought a better-than-expected close to the year.

In 2013, RAM published the ratings of 44 PDS and sukuk issues, with an aggregate programme value of RM78.6bil (2012: 63 issues, RM73.6bil; of this, RM22bil was issued.

The rating agency said the year's issuance was dominated by the financial-services sector, followed by infrastructure & utilities, diversified holdings and transportation.

Weir's investment in M'sia reaches RM1b

Scotland-based Weir Group Plc's investment in Malaysia has reached RM1 billion, todate, making it the largest British
company to invest in the country.

The investment included a US$200 million (approximately RM600 million) acquisition in Linatex Rubber Products Sdn Bhd in 2010, RM22 million acquisition in Cheong Foundry last year and the proposed investment of 70 million British pounds (approximately RM350 million) in Sendayan Technology Park, Negeri Sembilan.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the decision by Weir Group to invest in Malaysia was an endorsement of the country's business friendly environment and quality workforce.

"Weir Group will double its workforce to 1,000 employees in two years. These are highly-skilled quality jobs that would help Malaysia move up the value chain to become a high-income nation by 2020," he told reporters during a field visit to Linatex Rubber Products' plant today.

Present were British High Commissioner to Malaysia Simon Featherstone and Weir Group chief executive officer Keith Cochrane.

Mustapa said the ministry was confident Weir Group's investment in Malaysia would benefit the country in many ways especially in terms of enhanced exports.

He said the company exported 95 per cent of its products and would be one of the vital industrial players in Malaysia's pursuit to increase the country's export numbers in the long-run.

"This is important as we aspire to enhance our exports. We are confident this company will help Malaysia achieve our export target.

"Although its (the company} contribution is small right now but the prospects of the oil and gas industry augured well for Weir Group," he said.

Operating in more than 70 countries, Weir Group's business profile included minerals, oil and gas, power and industrial.-- Bernama
