Iris stirs market interest again

KUALA LUMPUR: Iris Corp Bhd traded briefly at the 40-sen-a-share level for the first time in eight years yesterday, keeping punters guessing if the stock will yet again dominate trading
on Bursa Malaysia.

It was the most heavily traded stock on the exchange, with some 125 million shares exchanging hands.

It was also the second time in as many days that more than 100 million Iris shares had been snapped up.

The stock closed 0.5 sen higher to 38.5 sen, keeping investors guessing if the last two trading days were an exception to the norm or merely a curtain raiser for the rise of the Iris
juggernaut.

Iris shares were last traded at the 40-sen level nearly eight years ago although under very different circumstances.

The company was then infamous and firmly in retreat mode, as market regulators in Malaysia and the United States launched investigations for rigging and manipulation in the trading of its
shares.

The incredible run on Iris shares started in August 2005, and lasted for eight months. At its peak, trading on Iris shares
accounted for nearly a third of the volume on Bursa Malaysia.

From a meek stock trading at 8.5 sen a share in 2005, Iris surged 1,500 per cent to trade at a lofty RM1.37.

By May 2006, Iris shares were named by the stock exchange as designated securities, meaning buyers of the shares would have to
pay cash up-front. This had resulted in a free fall that saw some RM39 billion wiped out from the capitalisation of the
stock market.

Fast forward to 2014, Iris is still in the business of developing
and providing trusted data identification programmes, but its finances are much more muscular after a change in the
company’s shareholding landscape.

“The new shareholder has made a lot of difference, especially
on the perception front, with regard to Iris,” said Mercury
Securities research head Edmund Tham.

Last August, the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) bought 20 per cent of Iris at a 40 per cent premium, in a deal which valued the company at RM110 million, or 28 sen a piece.

Subsequently, Felda picked up another six per cent of the company in the open market in November.

A senior dealer at RHB Bank speculated that the heavy volume and net buying in Iris shares over the past two days could be due to Felda buying more of Iris shares from the open market.

Others speculated that Iris would be the key player in the new I-Kad, a form of identity card for Malaysia’s 2.5 million foreign workers.

The speculation hinged on Iris’ track record of putting Malaysia on the map by developing the world’s first biometric passports that were put in place in 1998, as well as developing the MyKad.
