KUCHING: The communities in three river locations in Sarawak has approved the state government’s construction of cascading dams in their area, Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said.

He said the construction at Sungai Gaat, Sungai Tutoh and Sungai Belaga would be carried out by private companies, with the electric cable grid routes provided by Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB).

KUCHING (Jan 13): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should continue helming the country until the end of the Parliament’s term, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said.

The Sarawak Premier said that according to the democratic system, the leader of the government should be chosen through elections, adding that support for Anwar was important so that there is stability for the Federal Government to govern with more focus.

“If there already is a Prime Minister (Anwar), then let him finish, as the government determined by democracy is when elections are held, so the decision must remain till it’s done.

“If (we change Prime Ministers) in midterm, it will lead to an uncertain situation and the people will be the victims,” he said during the Seven Years with YAB Sarawak Premier townhall session tonight.

Anwar was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister in front of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on November 24, 2022.

KUCHING, Fri: 2024 will be an even greater for Sarawak although not devoid of challenges, Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg said today.

Based on Sarawak’s successes in 2023 under his leadership, he expressed his belief that 2024 would be another successful chapter in Sarawak’s collective journey towards becoming a prosperous region.

Of course, to achieve the state’s ambitious 2030 target, Sarawakians must embrace another year of challenge and continue to work tirelessly together, he added.

Reflecting the achievements in 2023, he said Sarawak’s revenue rose to another record high at RM13.3 billion.

The Premier was addressing civil servants, political leaders and stakeholders during the Premier’s Amanat Perdana programme at BCCK, here in conjunction with his seventh year in office.

He told the hundreds-strong crowd that he was to share with them that Sarawak began the new year with a remarkable start.

“Amanah Saham Sarawak (ASSAR) which is the Sarawak flagship unit trust fund, announced its first dividend distribution of 2.5 cents per unit, after a nine-year break.

“What is most encouraging about this interim dividend distribution is that it was accomplished just a year after the completion of the ASSAR restructuring in October 2022.

“This dividend was based on income generated in the span of just 6 months, after the fund was successfully invested under its new investment strategy and asset allocation mix,” he pointed out.

On another front, he said the renewable energy industry was expected to be further developed with the involvement of investors from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“A month ago, I was in Dubai attending the 2023 United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties, more commonly known as COP28.

“At the conference, I witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sarawak Energy Berhad and United Arab Emirates state-owned clean energy provider, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, widely known as MASDAR.

“One of the targets outlined in the MoU is the joint effort to develop 2 Gigawatts of renewable energy in Malaysia, with plans to kick off Phase 1 of this initiative by developing 1 Gigawatt in Sarawak,” the Premier said.

He further said in addition to the focus on solar and energy storage, Sarawak Energy and MASDAR were set to explore collaborative opportunities in hydro projects throughout Malaysia.

“We are also exploring collaboration opportunities between PETROS and Mubadala Investment Company, to explore collaboration opportunities, with a particular focus on the energy and carbon sectors.

“I have formed a special committee that will involve PETROS and Sarawak Energy working together with Mubadala and MASDAR to facilitate the details of these investments,” he told the audience.
