Iris active, jumps near 6% on heavy trades

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): Iris Corp Bhd has continued to extend gains since announcing last week that it has clinched a new Nigerian e-passports job — and hit its five-month high today.

At 3.24 p.m., the stock was trading at 17.5 sen, up 0.5 sen or 2.94%, after 80.58 million shares changed hands, valuing it at RM404.86 million. It had earlier touched 18 sen, or up as much as 5.88%.

Iris was the second most actively-traded stock on the exchange. It has gained 20.7% since Aug 11, when it announced it had bagged a US$42.49 million (RM170.38 million) contract to supply 2.5 million units of 32-page electronic passports (e-passports) to Nigeria over three years.

Iris inked the supply agreement on Aug 10 with IRIS Smart Technologies Ltd (ISTL) for the deal. The contract was to commence “from the date of the agreement”.

Meanwhile, the airline and airport security systems provider announced today that it has granted another extension to the purchaser of its 29.83% stake in Versatile Creative Bhd.

Iris said the purchase price may also be revised up to RM23.1 million, from the initial RM21 million.

Edmund Fong — the purchaser for the block of shares — had requested a further extension of time to the completion date to Sept 20, Iris said, with the condition that shares acquired between Aug 20 and Sept 20 will be priced at 66 sen per share.

"Shares crossed from Aug 16 up to Aug 19 shall be priced at the original pricing of 60 sen per share, as per the initial agreement," Iris said.

Iris entered into the sale and purchase agreement with the purchaser on May 10, for the sale of 35 million ordinary shares, representing 29.83% of Versatile Creative, at a disposal price of RM21 million or 60 sen per share.

The disposal was to allow the group to realise the value of its non-core assets, in line with its move to focus on its core businesses.

In a report in The Star Online, Nur Jazlan said that the long queues at passport counters around the country was not the Immigration Department’s fault but that of the vendor who has failed to meet demand.
“We are reviewing the new vendor’s performance. In the meantime, we apologise and ask for the public’s patience,” he was quoted as saying.
Datasonic Group Bhd is the principal supplier of the passports and many of the chips used on the data page allegedly had defects.

Datasonic imports the biodata polycarbonate data page which contains the microchip and holds information pertaining to the passport bearer.
This follows Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s order to increase the production to 20,000 passports daily, to meet the shortfall.
Until then, the vendor was reportedly only providing between 5,000 and 10,000 passports daily.
According to the news portal, checks around the country showed that the problem was largely in the Klang Valley. Passports were being issued as usual in Johor and Penang.
