Deng Xiaoping visited Tokyo in 1978 and again in 1979. The records of these visits are important for understanding Sino-Japanese relations, the rise of China, and Japan’s role in the Cold War.
The October 1978 Visit
Sources related to Deng’s first visit, in October 1978, include the record of Deng’s talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda Takeo, as well as records of talks between Japanese Foreign Minister Sonoda Sunao and Chinese Foreign Minister Huang Hua.

The purpose of Deng’s visit was ostensibly to exchange instruments of ratification for the new Japan-China peace treaty signed in August 1978. In fact, however, the trip was an opportunity for Deng to recruit the Japanese leadership in a worldwide Chinese struggle against the Soviet Union – a struggle that was coming to a head in Indochina. At the same time, the trip was an opportunity for Deng Xiaoping to study firsthand the remarkable development of the postwar Japanese economy at just the time that Deng was envisioning the transformation of the Chinese economy under the Reform and Opening program.

The importance of the economic program is reflected in Deng’s itinerary. In addition to his talks with Prime Minister Fukuda, Deng also toured a Nippon Steel plant, a Nissan auto plant, met with Japanese industrial and business leaders and the leaders of Japan’s most important industrial and economic organizations like the Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren). Deng’s highly publicized tour, which included a meeting with the Japanese emperor was also an important symbol of a new era of friendly relations. In many ways, Deng’s trip to Japan was a forerunner to Deng’s more well-known visit to the United States in January 1979, which, in fact, provided the opportunity for Deng’s second visit to Japan.

Our PM then returned the gesture and visited Japan the year after. Both of them then released a joint statement at the end of his trip to Japan, saying:

“… lawatan ini yang menyusul selepas lawatan Perdana Menteri Kishi ke Kuala Lumpur memberikan peluang kepada kedua-dua pihak menjalin hubungan peribadi antara mereka. Hubungan ini membolehkan mereka bertukar-tukar pandangan secara lebih rapat dan dapat mempertingkatkan kerjasama antara mereja.”

which roughly means, “…this trip that followed PM Kishi’s trip to KL gave both parties a chance to form a personal relationship with each other. This relationship allows us to exchange our views and heighten our cooperation.”

These two trips marked the beginning of a much closer and friendlier relationship between the two countries.

HOW DID MALAYSIA AND JAPAN’S RELATIONSHIP HEAL AFTER WW2?
After our independence, Japan apologised to Malaysia, and we accepted it
Just after our independence, PM Kishi paid a visit to Malaya and personally apologized to the Sultan of Selangor, who at that time was the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The apology was very nice of them but what our PM announced around the time of PM Kishi’s visit to Malaya was also really beautiful:

“Our policy, then and now, is to be at peace with the world, so when Mr. Kishi expressed a wish to come to Malaya, I naturally welcomed the idea. I believe that the past should not dictate the present and future. If you cannot forget, you can still forgive. Let bygones be bygones is the best path to peace.” – Tunku Abdul Rahman

The statements were made at and after the end of World War II in Asia, from the 1950s to present day. Controversies remain to this day about war crimes of the past and the appropriate person to make the apology.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin today slammed remarks by Anwar Ibrahim stating Malaysia's willingness to negotiate with China over concerns about exploration activities by Petronas in the South China Sea, saying they undermine Malaysia's territorial claims."The statement is careless and should not come from a prime minister. The implication of this statement is that it indirectly recognises China's claim to an area that is already legally Malaysian territory that must be defended," the former prime minister said.

Anwar, in a speech briefing the Dewan Rakyat on his recent official trip to China, said while Petronas would continue its activities in the area, Malaysia was open to negotiations with Beijing over its concerns.

"I stressed... that Malaysia sees the area as Malaysian territory therefore Petronas will continue its exploration activities there," he said.

"But if China feels this is their right, Malaysia is open to negotiations."

Muhyiddin said Malaysia's territorial rights are not open to negotiation "even if it is claimed by China". He said there while there was no disputing that China was a global economic power, "it does not mean Malaysia's sovereignty can be compromised".

"Malaysia must firmly defend its territorial sovereignty and national security to protect the country's territorial rights and claims. "The prime minister's statement about Malaysia's openness to negotiate over its territorial rights has exposed it to the risk of a threat to its national sovereignty," he said, adding that Anwar's statement was weak, irresponsible and amounted to "surrendering the dignity and sovereignty of the country to a foreign power".

Petronas has been operating within the exclusive economic zone, part of which is claimed by China as its territory based on the so-called "nine-dash line".

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration based in The Hague ruled that the nine-dash line had no legal basis.

Malaysia and China are among seven states surrounding the South China Sea which have laid territorial claims. The others are Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

China has been flexing its military muscle in the area in a move designed to shore up its territorial claim over the entire South China Sea.

Muhyiddin said Anwar had further undermined Malaysia's territorial sovereignty by repeating Chinese claims that its military presence was in "international waters".

He said Asean member states had yet to reach any consensus on conflicting claims in the South China Sea, but had rejected the nine-dash line claimed by Beijing.

"Regarding overlapping claims, any discussions must be held in accordance with the Asean Consensus and the South China Sea Code of Conduct," said Muhyiddin.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said there was nothing new about a Taiwanese president transiting through the United States and Beijing should not use it as an excuse to take any action or ratchet up tensions.

McCarthy, a Republican who through his House position is number three in the U.S. leadership hierarchy, was due to host Tsai on Wednesday morning at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, near Los Angeles.

It will be the highest-level meeting with a Taiwanese president on U.S. soil since Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.

Chinese property developer Sunac posts $2 billion core loss in 2022

Chinese property developer Sunac posts $2 billion core loss in 2022
Story by Reuters • Friday

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Major property developer Sunac China on Friday logged a net narrowing core loss of 13.86 billion yuan ($2.02 billion) in 2022, as the debt-laden firm slowed its project construction and incurred higher interest expenses.

Over the last two years, property firms in China have either struggled to sell new houses or have sold them at lower prices than expected, though a series of supportive policies from the government drove expectations of a faster recovery of the sector.

Last year's core net loss, which excludes the revaluation of assets and financial instruments and foreign exchange loss, compares to a 25.30 billion yuan loss reported in 2021.

Sunac also published its overdue 2022 interim results on Friday, posting a core loss of 11.06 billion yuan.

The Beijing-based firm said its shares, which are under a year-long halt, are expected to resume trading in April this year. They had been suspended pending the release of its financial results.
unac is among the many Chinese developers that defaulted last year as the sector reeled under a debt crisis. It started recording losses in the second half of 2021.

The property developer said earlier this week it had reached agreements with a group of offshore creditors to convert its debt into new notes and convertible bonds backed by its Hong Kong-listed shares, and shares in its property management unit Sunac Services.

Its chairman Sun Hongbin told investors the developer has been actively working with asset managers and applying for official funding to ensure developments are completed.

"The Group will strive to complete the necessary legal procedures for the offshore debt restructuring within 2023," Hongbin said in a statement.
