Vaccine concerns rise as variant fuelling UK infections mutates

The more infectious B.1.1.7 variant that has come to dominate coronavirus infection in the UK is evolving further mutations, which scientists say will make existing vaccines less effective at preventing infection.

Deaths after Pfizer vaccination at Spanish nursing home aggravate concerns

Concerns over the mRNA vaccine intensified following a Russia Today report on Monday that all 78 residents at a nursing home in Madrid, Spain had tested positive for COVID-19 after being given their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on January 13, and at least seven people have died.

JERUSALEM

Israel has vaccinated more than three million citizens against the coronavirus pandemic. However, the numbers of new infections are still on the rise.

“The surge of COVID-19 infections is a complicated question,” Ian Miskin, head of the coronavirus care and vaccination for the Clalit healthcare provider in Jerusalem, told Anadolu Agency on Monday.

He said the British-born variant of the coronavirus could be the main cause behind the rise in the numbers of COVID-19 cases in Israel.

"When the vaccination campaign started in late December, the new variant was the cause of 30-40% of infections. Now, around 80% of the new virus cases were diagnosed with the British variant,” he said.

Miskin said the British virus variant is spreading among children.

According to the Israeli Health Ministry, more than three million people have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Around 1.7 million Israelis have received two doses of the vaccine, the ministry said.

Miskin said almost 90% of Israelis over 60 have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The second phase of the campaign includes vaccinating Israelis over 40 and 50. We need 2-3 weeks to complete their vaccination,” he said.

“In almost a month, the majority of Israel’s population will be vaccinated against the virus.”

Israel recorded 2,596 new infections and 23 fatalities from the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday.

Since the start of the virus outbreak early last year, 641,373 people in Israel have been diagnosed with the virus, according to Health Ministry figures. The death toll stood at 4,768.

The Israeli government has imposed a strict lockdown, including the closure of Ben Gurion airport and border terminals, as part of efforts to stem the spread of the pandemic.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope that normal life could return in March.

Israel will hold general elections on March 23, with the pandemic and the vaccination campaign becoming main topics during electoral campaigns.

Several Israeli figures have blamed Netanyahu for failing to deal firmly with certain Israeli groups that refuse to abide by the coronavirus measures.

"Many times, we face difficulty in convincing some of the population to take the vaccination," Netanyahu said, in reference to the Ultra-Orthodox Jews who refuse to abide by the measures.

Miskin expects that the virus may last for long in Israel as the country prepares to reopen its borders.

"It is a war, but we can win it," Miskin said.

If confirmed by other vaccine trials currently under way in South Africa, the finding that people who have already had Covid-19 can get infected again by a new variant could have important repercussions for the world’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic. It suggests that reaching herd immunity through natural infection may be difficult if the virus mutates in ways that allow it to evade the human immune response.

Don’t let your guard down! New variants may drive up COVID-19 death toll
US coronavirus model forecasts new variants may drive up the COVID-19 death toll. Read on to know more.
By: Arushi Bidhuri | | Updated: February 1, 2021 11:31 am

Before the world could fully fathom the inner workings of the microscopic villain i.e. coronavirus, new variants of COVD-19 took over the world. The novel coronavirus, which has claimed millions of lives across the world within a year has undergone many mutations. The rapid spread of the new variant of coronavirus has put the world on a high alert. So far, four variants of the coronavirus have affected different parts of the world with uncertainties around the numbers and vaccines prepared to fight against the disease. COVID-19 Variants Likely To Increase Death Toll
Against the backdrop, a new influential COVID-19 model has predicted a possible “spring spike” in coronavirus deaths in the United States if emerging variants rapidly spread and people let their guard down. Latest media reports suggest that B.1.351 variant first detected in South Africa and identified in the United States this week could drive the country’s COVID-19 death toll up to 6,54,000 by May 1 in a worst-case scenario if mobility returns to pre-pandemic levels. Analysis
Why the Mutated Coronavirus Variants Are So Worrisome

By Jason Gale | Bloomberg
Feb. 1, 2021 at 4:30 p.m. GMT+8
Viruses mutate all the time, including the novel coronavirus that’s caused the global Covid-19 pandemic. Most of the changes have no apparent effect. But recent variants that have emerged in the U.K., South Africa and Brazil are causing particular concern. Studies suggest they are more contagious, and some evidence points to the U.K. strain being more deadly. An increase in infections has led to a surge in hospitalizations and deaths in England and elsewhere. Drugmakers say their vaccines should still work, although some are looking at new versions. Some researchers warn the shots may need to be updated periodically to maintain their efficacy.

1. How widespread is this?

The variant that emerged in southeast England in September, dubbed the B.1.1.7 lineage, contributed to a surge in cases that sent the U.K. back into lockdown in January. Other countries have followed, particularly in Europe, and are ratcheting up precautions like wearing masks. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control on Jan. 21 raised the risk of spread of the new variants in the European Union to “very high.” In the U.S., health officials have warned the strain could become dominant as soon as March; President Joe Biden toughened rules in his first days in office to try to contain it. In southern Africa, hospitals are facing pressure from a resurgence driven by another variant, 501Y.V2. Brazilian researchers are warning that a so-called P.1 variant spotted in Manaus, Amazonas state, in December may have driven a surge in cases that strained the health system and led to oxygen shortages. Much less is known about this variant, which has been found in the U.S., Japan and South Korea among travelers from Brazil. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles say a novel strain has emerged in California, though less is known about its importance and some scientists have questioned its existence.

2. How serious is it?

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Jan. 22 that new evidence had led the government to revise its original view that the B.1.1.7 variant wasn’t more dangerous. The government said that on average, for 1,000 men in their 60s, 13 to 14 would die if they contracted the new variant, compared to 10 for the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. However, quality of care could also play a role: Another U.K. study found mortality rates were higher for Covid patients admitted to intensive care during high-occupancy periods, and decreased for admissions when the unit was less full. Johnson said the number of Covid patients hospitalized as of Jan. 22 -- 38,562 -- was 78% higher than during the first peak last April.

3. How quickly have the strains spread?

Rapidly. They have become the dominant strains in multiple countries, aided by year-end holidays that are traditionally associated with increased family and social mixing. By early January, cases caused by the B.1.1.7 variant had been identified in some 50 countries or territories, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Singapore and South Korea. Similarly, the 501Y.V2 variant that was first detected in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, in early October has led to a steep rise in cases across nine southern African countries as well as the Seychelles and Mauritius. By mid-January, 501Y.V2 had been identified in 10 countries in Europe, with clusters of cases reported in the U.K. and Israel and another under investigation in France.

4. How much are the variants increasing transmission?

The new variants appear to have some advantage over other versions that has enabled them to quickly predominate, although factors such as people congregating indoors more in colder weather may also contribute to spread. Scientists in South Africa have found the new strain there is about 50% more transmissible than earlier versions. The variant in the U.K. has been found to be 56% to 70% more transmissible. It has acquired 17 mutations compared to its most recent ancestor -- a faster rate of change than scientists typically observe. A U.K. advisory group noted in December that the B.1.1.7 lineage may result in an increase in the basic reproduction number, or R0 (the average number of new infections estimated to stem from a single case) in the range of 0.39 to 0.93 -- a “substantial increase.” Public Health England reported in January that patients infected with the variant were more likely to infect their contacts than if they had a “regular” strain.

5. How many mutations are there?

AD
Many thousands of mutations and distinct lineages have arisen in the SARS-CoV-2 genome since the virus emerged in late 2019. A variant with a so-called D614G mutation emerged in early 2020. By June, it had replaced the initial strain identified in China to become the dominant form of the virus c

The efficacy of the vaccine varies from one geographical area to another and may be due to different virus strain. From the data collected by vaccine makers (i.e. Novavax, J&J, Sinopharm, etc) which have conducted trials in different countries, the efficacy varied greatly with some seeing as low as 49% in Africa against 89% in UK e.g. Novavax. Another question is how long will the antibody last? And, when the new strain will strike as well as how fast Covid is mutating?

Manaus, Brazil which was being praised for achieving herd immunity by natural infection is seeing a surge in hospitalization after a lapse of 7 months. Reinfection is taking place and some individual was seen infected by 2 different strain at the same time.

Though we hope to see an everlasting high efficiency vaccine, heightened hygiene will be in place till the pandemic is declared over by WHO. That will likely not happen till 2024 onwards when broad population were vaccinated. For now, there'll be structural change in the hygiene practices in all countries (be it whether they have achieve herd immunity or not) unless they lockdown its own economy and close the door

Coronavirus mutations add urgency to vaccination effort as experts warn of long battle ahead

The road to herd immunity from the coronavirus suddenly looks longer. The emergence of more transmissible, potentially vaccine-evading variants threatens to extend the global health disaster and make 2021 feel too much like 2020.

A complicated mix of good news and bad news makes any forecast for the coming months fuzzy. But scientists have one clear and sobering message: The pandemic is a long way from over
