KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia is likely to continue its upward momentum, with bargain hunting expected to push up the local index.

Affin Hwang Investment Bank vice-president/head of Retail Research Datuk Dr Nazri Khan Adam Khan said investors are expected to begin their pre-new year shopping in the last week of 2015.

“December and January are usually the seasonal buying months for stock market investors. With the oil prices starting to rebound, we expect some early buying for 2016,” he told Bernama.

He said he expects the local bourse to trade at between 1,660 and 1,680 points.

The sentiment would also be supported by the US Federal Reserve’s decision to finally increase its interest rates, which has resolved uncertainty among investors, giving them a clearer investment direction.

“Also, investors are eagerly awaiting the China stimulus package early in January, which is expected to be in a positive way,” he added.

The world’s second-largest economy recently concluded its annual planning meeting, pledging to be more proactive and flexible in using fiscal and monetary policy to keep growth in a “proper range”.

Back home, Nazri said the movement of the ringgit moving forward and the Trans-pacific Partnership (TPP) are expected to be the key drivers for the FBM KLCI’s performance.

“The ringgit should go up as commodity prices rebound,” he added.

The market was closed on Thursday and Friday for the Maulidur Rasul and Christmas holidays.

On a weekly basis, the key benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia (FBM KLCI) finished at 1,663.30, up 19.4 points from last week’s 1,643.90.

The FBM Emas Index rose 143.29 points to 11,627.71, the FBMT100 Index increased 144.21 points to 11,624.71, the FBM Emas Shariah appreciated 214.71 points to 12,605.78, the FBM 70 gained 205.81 points to 13,044.88 but the FBM Ace fell 1.20 points to 6,332.67.

Sector-wise, the Finance Index shed 25.52 points to 14,013.94, the Plantation Index improved 91.74 points to 7,505.73 and the Industrial Index was 5.55 points lower at 3,189.24.

Weekly turnover decreased to 5.08 billion units valued at RM4.78 billion from 8.38 billion units valued at RM9.70 billion recorded last week.

Main market volume eased to 3.39 billion units worth RM4.41 billion versus 5.29 billion units worth RM8.78 billion.

Warrant turnover shed to 629.11 billion units worth RM115.16 million against 1.28 billion units worth RM449.19 million. — Bernama
