AY.4.2, A Delta Covid-19 Coronavirus Subvariant, Has Spread To 42 Countries

This AY.4.2 takes the Delta variant and raises it three additional mutations, including two that affect the oh-so-important spike proteins that studs the surface of the virus. These mutations are called A222V and Y145H

The next coronavirus wave in Europe

The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is breaking over Europe, with few countries being spared a worrying rise in cases.

Comprehensive vaccination, it turns out, is necessary — but not sufficient — to contain the spread of the virus, which thrives in autumn and winter weather. Countries that had widely relaxed social-distancing restrictions over the summer are now considering re-implementing measures to stem the tide of increasing cases and hospitalizations.

Vaccination “solves part of the problem, but not all of it,” said Hajo Zeeb, professor of epidemiology at the University of Bremen. While vaccination does protect against infection, it’s not fool proof. Just as worrying is that immunity is waning, leading to countries turning to booster shots. “I think even the public are realizing that it's not all over,” he said.

WHO: Europe had most COVID-19 cases, deaths over last week

GENEVA — Europe stood out as the only major region worldwide to report an increase in both coronavirus cases and deaths over the last week, with double-digit percentage increases in each, the U.N. health agency said Wednesday.

The World Health Organization said new COVID-19 cases in its 53-country European region, which stretches as far east as former Soviet republics in Central Asia, recorded an 18% increase in COVID-19 cases over the last week — a fourth straight weekly increase for the area.

In WHO’s weekly epidemiological report on COVID-19, Europe also saw a 14% increase in virus-related deaths. That amounted to more than 1.6 million new cases and over 21,000 new deaths.

Casino Stats: Why Gamblers Rarely Win

In a down economy, it's normal to start thinking of alternative ways to generate some extra money, but if you're tempted into thinking gambling is one of those good alternatives, you need to keep reading.

Games of No Chance
Math is the universal language, and it rarely ever lies. Each game you play at a casino has a statistical probability against you winning. (Every single time.) While this house advantage varies for each game, ultimately it helps ensure that over time the casino won't lose money against gamblers.

The house advantage obviously doesn't mean that you can't win, because people do win (and sometimes they win substantial amounts). However, it does mean that the more you play, the more the math works against you, and the better the chances are of you walking out of the casino with less money in your wallet than when you came in.

The Bottom Line
Almost every time, it's in your best financial interest not to walk into that casino and place the bet—the math simply isn't your friend. For those who want to press their luck anyway, make sure to quit while you're ahead. That "winning streak" you're on is definitely all in your head.

How long have coronaviruses existed?

The most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all coronaviruses is estimated to have existed as recently as 8000 BCE, although some models place the common ancestor as far back as 55 million years or more, implying long term coevolution with bat and avian species.

Britain faces a “difficult winter” and uncertainty over whether rising coronavirus infections can be driven back down, Patrick Vallance has warned.

The chief scientific adviser said ministers must be prepared to reintroduce restrictions sooner than they wanted to and push through their “natural reluctance”.

Sir Patrick’s comments came after hospitals were ordered to end immediately the “catastrophic” delays to ambulance handovers that have proved fatal in at least one case, before a feared winter wave of Covid-19 breaks.

NHS England (NHSE) warned people were dying before paramedics could reach them because the crushing pressure on hospitals meant the ambulance workers were stuck waiting outside A&E departments, unable to hand over the patients they already had.

Singapore sees ‘unusual surge’ in cases; Europe Covid deaths rise 14% in a week

The UK recorded 43,941 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday and 207 more people have died within 28 days of a positive test, official figures show. Sir Patrick Vallance – chief scientific adviser to the government – has told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that the UK was still in a “very uncertain phase” of the pandemic.

Russia set a new daily record for coronavirus cases, recording 40,096 in the past 24 hours. There were 1,159 deaths officially recorded.

Ukraine has reported a record daily high of 26,071 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, the health ministry said earlier today.

Bulgaria is experiencing a new wave of coronavirus infection amid government attempts to impose a “green certificate” vaccine passport on indoor activities, which has sparked a wave of protest on the streets of Sofia.

While not officially named, it could soon be called the the Nu variant under the Greek alphabetical system for naming new strains of the Covid virus.

Experts estimate it first emerged in London or the South East, but there is no clear proof on its origin yet.

It carries two key mutations, A222V and Y145H, which both slightly alter the shape of the spike protein which the virus uses to invade cells.

There is more concern about the mutation Y145H, which slightly changes the shape of the site antibodies bind to making it harder for them to stop an infection from happening.

Scientists say this builds on mutations in Delta, and could make the subtype even more resistant to vaccines than its parent.

A subvariant of the Covid Delta strain which is on the rise in the UK is now on the World Health Organization's radar.

AY.4.2 — detected in all but 12 areas of England — is feared to be up to 15 per cent more infectious than its already highly virulent ancestor.

UK health chiefs labelled it a 'variant under investigation' last week as they seek to establish how much infectious it is or if it is better able to evade vaccines.

Now the WHO is also taking special notice of AY.4.2, dedicating a whole segment of its weekly epidemiological report to the new strain.

More than 26,000 cases of the offshoot have been reported from 42 countries as of October 25, the UN agency said.

Fewer than two dozen parts of England have yet to see 'Nu' Delta off-shoot which scientists fear is up to 15% more transmissible than its ancestor

One of the Government's largest Covid surveillance programmes found AY.4.2 was in 294 of 315 local authorities (93 per cent) up to October 9, the latest day statistics are available for.

It comes amid fears AY.4.2 is helping to turbo-charge outbreaks in parts of the South West, where cases have reached record highs in the wake of a laboratory testing blunder.

The strain is now behind more than one in five infections in areas of Devon, Wiltshire and Somerset, which have some of the fastest growing infection rates in the country. It makes up more than 10 per cent of infections across England, having doubled in the space of three weeks.

Scientists have raised concerns over AY.4.2 after it advanced from London and the South East to the rest of the country within a matter of weeks.

Covid cases have begun rising across Europe, with Germany the latest country to issue a warning after infections rose sharply this week - but added the rise is to be 'expected' as winter approaches.

The German health ministry said on Friday that cases are 'escalating' in 'all age groups' after recording almost 20,000 new infections in 24 hours, a rise of 70 per cent week-on-week even with mask mandates and Covid passports in place.

'It is to be expected that the increase in case numbers will pick up speed in... autumn and winter,' Oliver Ewald said, with German ministers not expected to increase current restrictions or reimpose lockdowns.

Germany's figures mirror a trend that is building across much of Europe with the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Poland among dozens of countries seeing infection rates rise as colder weather arrives.

Covid-19 Delta subvariant: amid rising concerns in Britain, what was India’s experience like?

Mutations of the Delta variant have not been more malevolent than the parent but the subtype causing concern in Britain is AY.4.2, which has ‘nothing to do’ with India’s experience of Delta Plus variants, says an expert

experts say India’s experience with mutations of the Delta variant may not necessarily be instructive for Britain. For one, the mutations in India are largely the AY.1 and AY.2 variants. India has had some cases of the AY.4 variant, but the one now causing concern in Britain is the AY.4.2 subtype, which is a combination of AY.4 and the S:Y145H spike mutation.

“All of them are Delta, but the Indian experience with AY.1 and AY.2 has nothing to do with the AY.4.2 lineage which is causing concern in the UK right now.”
