KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Telekom Malaysia Bhd is confident it can deliver stronger earnings for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2019 (FY19) after posting a 12% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in profit in the second quarter of FY19 (2QFY19).

At a press conference to announce its results for the fist half of FY19 (1HFY19), TM CEO Datuk Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin said he was bullish about the long term. "For the short term, our earnings will be within guidance, for the [long-term] future I am bullish. It is possible for us as we improve our mobile offerings, and once we do that there is a high possibility that our earnings can grow further."

Given TM’s role as the national broadband provider, the group will likely bear up to half of the NFCP cost, which translates to RM2.2bil over the next 5 years. Besides TM’s own capex requirements, the NFCP rollout alone translates to 19% of FY20F revenue — already above management’s FY19F capex target of 18% and 8% in 1HFY19. Additionally, the thrust of the NFCP towards connecting the rural population could mean that revenue accretion from these investments will be minimal.

Yesterday, the Cabinet approved the implementation of the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) over a 5- year period from this year to 2023 at a cost of RM21.6bil. This is in line with the government's objective to recognise access to the internet as a basic right, ensuring equal access to the internet for both urban and rural residents.

We cut our FY20-21 earnings forecasts which resulted in a lower TP of RM1.40, pegged to 20x of CY20 EPS. Maintain HOLD.

Next Q should be better as last year the huge cost of impairment slotted in Q4. Without huge impairment cost, TM yoy profits will jump significantly. The lesser revenue is expected but moving fwrd the revenue will increase as more subscribers are registering for new pricing of Streamyx. Unifi Air also will give TM a boost. Most importantly, TM is almost certain will get 5G license.

TM is definitly as buy stock. Buy on weakness. Rm3.95 is a strong support level. Even if the overall market turns bad, it won't down that much. Afterall the Govt wants TM to be included in KLCI..so they will support the price. So why worries??
