The powdered version of Pfizer Vaccine certainly wont be available in early 2021 as it takes time to develop the second generation vaccine in powder form. Not the mention additional clinical trials required to be conducted on the powdered form.

----------

Amid cold chain blues, Pfizer looks to powder vaccine formula in 2021: report

The drugmaker is weighing several options for an improved vaccine that could be ready as early as 2021. "For the COVID-19 disease, I think we'll roll out next year a vaccine in powder format," Pfizer's chief scientist, Mikael Dolsten, told Business Insider Monday.

While Dolsten didn't specify the storage temperature requirements for a powder-form vaccine, the second-generation version "could be just for refrigeration," providing at least "one simplification" over the drugmaker's current version. The first-generation form must be stored frozen at negative 94 degrees Fahrenheit, executives have said.

But the costs and logistics of such a plan add up fast and vaccine experts have warned that storage requirements for Pfizer's shot could hinder access in all but the wealthiest of nations. Given the novel mRNA platform behind Pfizer's shot, many countries will face the question of whether to establish previously unneeded deep-freeze production and transportation networks or wait for a vaccine based on an established technology. Other vaccines, such as those from Novavax and Johnson & Johnson, could utilize existing infrastructure.

This has led some, including Ding at the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute, to question the benefit of overhauling storage infrastructure with a number of other vaccine candidates seemingly around the corner.

“If there is a protein-based vaccine that could achieve the same effect as an mRNA vaccine does and there’s the need to vaccinate billions of people every year, I’d go for the protein-based shots in the long run."

Goverment will sign vaccine MOU with China by the end of this year. Based on my reserarch, currently Sinopharm is ahead of Sinovac vaccine. Furthermore, Sinopharm is state owned. So most likely, Sinopharm vaccine will be the chosen one during the signing of the vaccine MOU with China.

@Hitman Yes it is the final phase before it can be approved. Once phase III is complete and safety and efficacy is proved to be satisfactory, the Drug Regulatory Authority can proceed to approve the vaccine.

Brazil RESUMES trials of Chinese COVID-19 vaccine

Brazil on Wednesday RESUMED the trials of a Chinese COVID-19 vaccine after halting them on Monday over a mysterious death. The reported "severe adverse event" was later said to be not related to the vaccine but likely a suicide.

Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) announced on Wednesday morning local time to resume the trial of a vaccine candidate developed by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech (Sinovac) .

It is unclear how the case triggered a sudden suspension of the trial but analysts suspect political involvement.

The Butantan Institute, a Sao Paulo-based sponsor of the trial, told the Global Times that it had sent notice of the volunteer's death to Anvisa on November 6. "In conclusion, it was stated that the death was not related to the test vaccine," said the statement sent by the Butantan Institute.

Of course not all muslims are particular about the halal status of vaccines but quite a number of muslims may be reluctant to take the vaccine if the halal status is questionable.

"Suicide halts Brazil trial of Chinese vaccine attacked by Bolsonaro

Although a trial volunteer had died, it had nothing to do with the vaccine, Jean Gorinchteyn, Health Secretary for the state of Sao Paulo told a news conference on Tuesday. “We had an external event that led to the regulator being notified,” Gorinchteyn said. “This vaccine is safe.”

Dimas Covas, the head of Sao Paulo’s medical research institute Butantan, which is conducting the Sinovac trial, said the vaccine had shown no serious adverse effects. Speaking at the same news conference, he said he hoped the trial would be resumed later on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sinovac’s vaccine is among the three experimental COVID-19 vaccines China has been using to inoculate hundreds of thousands of people under an emergency use program. A Chinese health official said on Oct. 20 that no serious side effects had been observed in clinical trials.

Indonesia’s state-owned Bio Farma said on Tuesday its Sinovac vaccine trials were “going smoothly.”

I did a comparison of Sinopharm Vaccine vs Sputnik V Vaccine vs Pfizer Vaccine

1. Sinopharm vaccine :
- Inactivated vaccine (well established vaccine technology)
- Safety proven
- EFFICACY 100%
- Storage temperature 2-8C

2. Sputnik V Vaccine
- Adenovirus vector vaccine (This vaccine technology is not well established - In 2017, China approved the vaccine, but only for emergency use and national stockpiling. That made it the first, and still only, adenoviral vector vaccine approved for humans—with the big caveat that the Phase II study did not prove the vaccine prevented Ebola infections)
- For less established vaccine technology, phase IV post marketing studies which gathers evidence of use in real world setting is especially important as rare side effects can pop up when there is widespread use.
- Safety is questionable as evidenced by halting of covid vaccine clinical trials by Johson and Johnson as well as Astrazeneca due to major/ serious side effects (both based on Adenovirus Vector Vaccine technology)
- EFFICACY 92%
- Storage temperature not higher than -18C (this means ≤ -18C)

3. Pfizer Vaccine
- mRNA vaccine (This vaccine technology is completely new and NOT well establised. So far there are ZERO vaccines approved anywhere in the world for use in humans)
- For less established vaccine technology, phase IV post marketing studies which gathers evidence of use in real world setting is especially important as rare side effects can pop up when there is widespread use.
- Safety so far seems to be acceptable but safety can only be proven in post marketing phase IV studies. So that remains to be seen.
- EFFICACY 90%
- Storage tempreature -70C

Expert scoffs at Pfizer, BioNtech vaccine viability for Pakistan

Chairman of Prime Minister's Taskforce on Science and Technology Dr Atta ur Rehman yesterday remarked that the Pfizer vaccine, being celebrated worldwide, is NOT SUITABLE for Pakistan.

The scientist explained that Pakistan which is administering trials of two Chinese vaccines were also showing positive results.

'One Chinese vaccine, by Sinopharm, is also in phase 3 clinical trials and has seen good results in multiple countries, but they have not highlighted it like Pfizer and are working quietly, said Dr Rehman.

He added the trial of the vaccine is being administered in Karachi University's International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences and Indus Hospital.

The Task Force chairman also said the company has also committed to giving the vaccine to Pakistan at 'reasonable rates. He also shared that another Chinese vaccine's phase 3 clinical trial is being administered at the National Institute of Health.

Dr Rehman also explained that Chinese vaccines can also be transported in normal temperatures and do not have to be kept at -80C degrees which he believes makes it better 'suited for Pakistan and Third World countries.

Malaysia should speed up efforts in securing Covid-19 vaccines that are in the process of being approved for use in other countries, says Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

"China’s Sinopharm has also been reported to be a success so far.

"Malaysia should likewise get cracking now to evaluate various vaccines that are in the final stages of trials, so as to prepare for mass vaccinations for its frontliners and citizens," he stressed.

Yong also highlighted the importance that these vaccines are provided for free, so that all citizens will benefit.

He said the government should also come up with an interim guidance on how the order of priority should be; for example those working as frontliners in the health and security sectors (doctors, nurses, police, prison and immigration staff etc).

This is followed by older adults in home care and its workers, high-risk groups of adults with underlying conditions, and also older citizens over 60 and so forth.

This follows Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin saying that the government will make advanced bookings for Covid-19 vaccines under Budget 2021.

Deep-Freeze Challenge Makes Pfizer’s Shot a Vaccine for the Rich

That euphoria is now being diluted by the realization that no currently used vaccine has ever been made from the messenger RNA technology deployed in Pfizer’s shot, which instructs the human body to produce proteins that then develop protective antibodies.

That means that countries will need to build from scratch the deep-freeze production, storage and transportation networks needed for the vaccine to survive. The massive investment and coordination required all but ensures that only rich nations are guaranteed access — and even then perhaps only their urban populations.

“Its production is costly, its component is unstable, it also requires cold-chain transportation and has a short shelf life,” said Ding Sheng, director of the Beijing-based Global Health Drug Discovery Institute, which has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The expense of deploying the Pfizer shot will likely heighten existing fears that wealthier nations will get the best vaccines first, despite a World Health Organization-backed effort called Covax that aims to raise $18 billion to purchase vaccines for poorer countries.

It also presents a choice now faced across the developing world: to pay for the expensive construction of subzero cold-chain infrastructure for what seems like a sure bet, or wait for a slower, more conventional vaccine that brews batches of protein or inactivated viral particles in living cells, and can be delivered through existing health-care networks.

“The requirement for extremely cold temperatures is likely to cause spoilage of a lot of vaccine,” said Michael Kinch, a vaccine specialist at Washington University in St. Louis.

The resulting price tag may be too hefty for many developing nations, including neighboring India, which has struggled to contain the world’s second-largest coronavius outbreak and currently has no agreement to purchase the Pfizer vaccine.

Currently, there are around 60,000 volunteers, as people from more than 125 nations join the vaccine trials, he said.

Zhang Yuntao, vice-president of CNBG and a primary researcher of the COVID-19 vaccines, said the company's phase three clinical trials of the two vaccine candidates are the LARGEST in terms of recipient population among all the vaccine candidates under the same stage of trials.

The wide coverage of recipients from different countries will also prepare a good foundation for the vaccines to be used globally once they receive regulatory approval after successful trials, he said

With the world's LARGEST medical distribution network at its disposal, the company has provided 3 billion items of medical protection gear to more than 130 countries and regions.

Governments the world over will now be wondering how many of these freezers they’ll need to buy. And at a cost of a few thousand pounds per unit, plus running costs of maybe £500-£750 per year, the bill could get large very quickly.

This kind of financial outlay may also be beyond rural Ghana and other resource-poor settings. It’s not just the cost of buying the vaccine itself that we need to think about.
It may be that in high-income countries, vaccinating vulnerable populations with a product that requires two doses and -80℃ storage is workable. In sub-Saharan Africa, a more useful product may potentially be one that needs one dose and has a less stringent cold chain, even if overall vaccine effectiveness is slightly lower.

Vaccine trials in Morocco could END IN A WEEK

Administered to more than 100,000 people in China, vaccines developed by public entity SINOPHARM against Covid-19 are in their final stages of testing. Morocco, which is participating to the process, will launch an expanded vaccination campaign in the coming weeks.

Dr Yahyane stressed that these trials «have not been completed yet», but that «they have reached the final phase». They are also monitored by «a scientific and technical committee, made up of independent researchers, national and international authorities recognized on a larger scale by their scientific publications and appointed by the Ministry of Health».

Abdelhakim Yahyane told Yabiladi that on Thursday, November 5, the second presentation of these tests allowed the committee to analyze the progress of this process, which is «positive» and whose results will be announced soon. «We have already noted that there have been no major adverse effects and those which have been observed are very minimal, quite normal, as is the case for all other vaccines», he declared.

The third phase of the trials allows us to better understand the side effects of the vaccine, which would not have been identified during the first two stages of the tests. In September, the Chinese government and Sinopharm did not report any adverse effects. So far, none of the people who have been vaccinated have contracted Covid-19.

«We are impatiently awaiting the end of this process, which could probably HAPPEN BY NEXT WEEK, to then receive the results from the Chinese laboratory. The protocol indeed requires that the latter to finalize the analyses and define a protocol, with scientific methods, before they are approved by Morocco», added Dr. Abdelhakim Yahyane.

SUICIDE halts Brazil trial of Chinese vaccine attacked by Bolsonaro

The trial’s organizers criticized Anvisa’s decision, saying they had not been notified in advance and that there was no reason to stop the trial.

Anvisa said the initial information it received from Butantan had not specified that the death was a SUICIDE.
