KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 14): The FBM KLCI cut losses after settling 0.69 point or 0.04% lower at 1,538.47 during Bursa Malaysia's afternoon close as Asian equities rose with US stock futures on expectation that the Covid-19 outbreak may prompt global central banks to keep interest rates low to support their respective economies.

In theory, lower interest rates are good for equities. Among US stock futures at the time of writing, S&P futures rose 6.75 points or 0.2% while Nasdaq futures added 32 points or 0.33%.

Across Bursa at 12:30pm, 1.59 billion shares worth RM1.08 billion were traded as global markets took cue from updates on the global Covid-19 outbreak, which started in China's Hubei province's capital Wuhan.

Reuters quoted Ryutaro Kimura, a fixed income strategist at Axa Investment Management, as saying Axa expected "considerable impact" on the global economy as China now accounts for around 17% compared to 4% during the SARS outbreak in 2002-2003, and it is integral to more supply chains.

"That means countries are likely to keep interest rates low for a longer period, keeping global bond yields low. Such an expectation in turn is supporting the world's share prices," Kimura said.

Bloomberg indicated that China’s Hubei province reported 4,823 additional coronavirus cases, confirming that the nearly 15,000 reported a day earlier was a one-off situation due to a new method for counting infections.

"The latest figure is still roughly double what the province was reporting daily before the new method was used, and sets a new benchmark to measure the outbreak. The death toll in China was at 1,380, lowered by more than 100 to account for some double-counting, while total cases topped 63,000," Bloomberg reported.

Across Bursa, top decliners included KLCI stocks Public Bank Bhd and Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd. Leading gainers included Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Yinson Holdings Bhd.

Most-active stocks included My EG Services Bhd and Ekovest Bhd

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 11): The proposed economic stimulus package is expected to address the cash flow problem affecting businesses, among others, in the wake of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The government is also expected to introduce initiatives to encourage domestic spending and spur tourism to generate business growth through higher domestic demand.

An announcement on the stimulus package will be made soon, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Economic Action Council (EAC) secretariat said in a statement today.

The second EAC meeting for 2020 was held in Putrajaya today and chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The meeting specifically discussed the impact of 2019-nCoV outbreak on the country's economic growth.

Among sectors identified to be most affected by the outbreak are the services industry such as tourism, retail and aviation.

In this regard, the EAC said the Ministry of Finance was in discussions with various ministries, agencies and industries, as well as service providers to seek input for the economic stimulus package.

During the meeting, the EAC also discussed proposals to reform the local capital market to help it grow and develop inclusively.

The proposals are in line with the changing capital market and financial technology landscape, as well as meet the expectations of industry players and investors.

At the same time, the move would further strengthen the regulatory and institutional foundation.

For this to materialise, the EAC has agreed that the existing forum should be proactively streamlined to allow stakeholders, including securities regulators, capital market authorities and the central bank, as well as industry players to work more closely together.

In line with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and the principles of inclusive development, the meeting also discussed on proposals on holistic development and upgrading of the socio-economy of the Orang Asli community.

Among major issues touched were ownership and development of the community’s customary land, access to health services, education and skills training, provision of basic infrastructure and economic development.

The EAC also agreed that a more specific action plan needed to be implemented soon to address the issues with the cooperation of all state governments

Prestasi ekonomi negara lebih baik berbanding serantau: Azmin
NOZINA YAHAYA | | 13 Februari 2020
