I think first one has to define what a good economy is--is it gdp growth? is it low poverty rates? is it rising financial wealth? the exchange rate is not a good barometer for how the economy is doing; cheap currency is often very stimulative for economies that rely more on global trade than internal aggregate demand.

@probability you can have real growth in absence of population growth and an increase in net exports. The solow growth model is a good theoretical framework to think about this. Stagnant population does not imply stagnant consumption but it does imply stagnant output if there is no increase in productivity of labor.

profits and stock price can go up even if sales doesn't. megasteel's hrc price was ~20% premium to international price and that accounts for ~80% of the cbee's production cost. imagine what 16% of topline going directly to the bottomline looks like + their liquid assets less all liabilities is already close to the price per share you are paying at this level
