Protesters descend on Parliament over GST, fuel price hike

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — About 100 protesters rallied outside Parliament here today to demand that Putrajaya restore fuel subsidies and abandon the goods and services tax (GST) due for implementation in April.
The group included representatives from Gabungan Bantah Cukai GST (Coalition against the GST tax), Protes Kenaikan Harga Minyak (Protest against oil price hike) and the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM).
“In one year petrol prices have gone up 40 sen. We want the government to undo the increase and scrap GST, which will burden the poor,” PSM deputy chairman M. Sarasvathy Muthu said.
Represented the protesters, Sarasvathy later presented a memorandum to PAS’s Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who submitted it to representatives from Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry Mohd Zin Zainal and from the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC), Colonel Omar Daud.
Mahfuz later told reporters that Malaysians want Prime Minister Najib Razak to announce in his Budget 2015 speech on Friday that the GST will not be carried out.
“The second announcement that the people is expecting is the reduction of oil prices down 40 sen because this year it went up 40 sen. If not, this budget is deemed meaningless,” he said.
Last Wednesday, the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry announced fuel subsidies will be cut by 20 sen, increasing the prices for RON95 petrol and diesel to RM2.30 per litre and RM2.20 per litre respectively.
Last month, Putrajaya was forced to deny reports that petrol and diesel would be subjected to the GST, with Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan saying that the government has “not made a final decision” on this matter.
Other non-government organisations involved in today's protest walk were Asalkan Bukan Umno (ABU) and student movements Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM).
The number of police officers keeping watch at the scene rivalled the number of protestors outside the Parliament building.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to table Budget 2015 in Parliament in two days.
Observers speculate that Putrajaya could further cut back subsidies on essential food items and reform the current fuel subsidy system to channel aid to targeted needy groups.
