DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Human trials of a Chinese vaccine in the United Arab Emirates have yielded positive results, the UAE’s national health authorities said Wednesday, citing an 86% efficacy rate.

The figure was announced by the UAE Ministry of Health via state news agency WAM, detailing an “interim analysis” conducted by Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG). The Gulf state of 10 million began Phase 3 human trials of the experimental vaccine in July, and in September approved its emergency use for health workers.

“The registration of this vaccine is a decision in response to the application from Sinopharm CNBG. The announcement is a significant vote of confidence by the UAE’s health authorities in the safety and efficacy of this vaccine,” the health ministry said Wednesday, without elaborating on what “registration” meant. The vaccine itself was developed by CNBG’s Beijing Institute of Biological Product.

The Phase 3 trials included 31,000 volunteers across 125 nationalities, the ministry said, highlighting the UAE’s diverse and large expatriate population — comprising roughly 90% of the country’s total population — as an advantage in carrying out human tests. The volunteers, between the ages of 18 and 60, took two doses of the vaccine over 28 days.

Chinese vaccine maker Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s coronavirus shot created antibodies among 97% of those administered with it in a final stage trial in Indonesia, said a company spokesperson on Tuesday.

Known as the seroconversion rate, this is separate from the vaccine’s efficacy, as a high seroconversion rate does not necessarily mean that the vaccine effectively protects people against Covid-19. Sinovac is still in the midst of determining its shot’s efficacy from final stage trial data, said the spokesperson.

Sinovac and Sinopharm, China’s two leading vaccine makers, are currently testing three vaccine candidates in phase III trials with candidates that could be distributed without cold storage chains. Sinovac's candidate, called CoronaVac, uses inactivated forms of COVID-19 to induce immune responses. Sinopharm's two unnamed candidates are both based on similar technology.

Beijing "absolutely" sees these Chinese-made vaccines as a potential substitution for AstraZeneca's candidate, says Huang. In state media outlets, Beijing is presenting Sinovac and Sinopharm's candidates as "particularly attractive to lower and middle income countries, especially the ones who cannot afford or don't have the capacity to sustain cold chain to distribute vaccines," Huang says.

Because they rely on inactivated forms of the virus, Sinovac's and Sinopharm's candidates are more stable in comparison to vaccines based on mRNA technology, meaning they don't need to be kept quite as cold. Similar to AstraZeneca, Sinovac says its vaccine can be stored and shipped at temperatures ranging from 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Chinese state media reports that Sinopharm's candidates can likely be stored at a similar 2 to 8 degree Celsius range.

Covid: Russia begins vaccinations in Moscow

Russia is starting its Covid-19 vaccination programme, with clinics in the capital Moscow inoculating those most at risk from the virus.

Its own vaccine Sputnik V, which was registered in August, is being used.

My viewpoint:

Covid-19 cases continue to be high. But every day life involves risks. At 0.5% mortality rate and 380 deaths, it is even lower than car accidents. Does that mean that cars should be banned, nobody should drive, all transportation should stop? No. Life must go on. But we must never forget to wear masks, sanitize our hands, practice social distancing and contract tracing, and do the best we can so lives can be protected. We do the best with what we are given
