hehe brother Spinninglotus :) This is where I tend to disagree with you that Greenspan or Big Ben purpose in loose monetary policy is to push up the market. Remember Greenspan's 'irrational exuberance'? It is their actions and not their intentions that pushed the market higher. When Greenspan was the Chairman, his purpose was to let the market dictate itself which was a right thing to do but you need to have some regulations and enforce it especially when it is showing sign that it is going out of control. You cannot let it go autopilot which he did. he wanted to dictate growth so kept interest rate low for far too long and thought that he could basically do as he wish with the rates and for a while he actually did well. Wall street and big banks were basically doing whatever they please as long as those big fat bonus were coming in at the expense of main street and Greenspan one of his many flaw policies include promoting Adjustable rates which was suicidal knowing full well that those ARM rates will rocket up once the terms expire if he were to increase the rates which he did to prevent bubbles that are forming at that time resulting in millions of foreclosures when the borrowers could not handle the increase in the monthly payments. Everybody was trying to get a cut and as long as all are making nobody cares. Everybody was getting loan with no payment down even on a 500k home with ARM. Even the illegal mexican was getting ARM at 4.25% for 5 years on a 350K home when his monthly salary was 1500. and guess what? when he finally increased the rate to contain the coming bubbles the market came crashing down on the ARM holders.

Actually Helicopter Ben is also on loose monetary policy but his is to avert a recession at all cost. Is it working? hard to say no since we are growing though very slowly. His low interest rate is to force the savers to spend more instead of save ( ain't that what we did in the first place before the crisis of 2008 and now repeating the same old mistakes again?)and in turn will provide the necessary growth to the economy. Of course he is indirectly encouraging savers to take a gamble elsewhere for higher returns like in the market where DJ is close to all time high minus the past week due to the fiscal cliff scares. The main problem is the funds that are provided by the fed are to the finance institutions but not to the small business or consumers that needed it most. The finance institutions are taking up the 1% loan from the feds but instead of helping out the small businesses they are buying up treasuries that provide 2-3% more so basically there's no incentive for them to take the risk and you are still seeing big profits for those big banks.
Since obama and senate won handsomely with House gaining some despite the poor economy the ball is at the Republican feet to get this fiscal cliff avoided as they were the ones that opposed the tax cuts for the wealthy and that medicare, medicaid and obamacare will stay but military spending will need to be cut and so will be domestic spendings and they will have to increase taxes for sure. can it be done? - will the Republicans agree to it? I believe they will but I'm not guranteeing it since you're dealing with a bunch of republicans that have too much egos on their side.
o.k I'm not going to be 'cheong hei' here if I'm not already but Greenspan is just a lousy fed chairman and I think BT has him as one of the very top fellas to be blamed for the mess we're in.
Are we going to recession? - who knows? we will if the fiscal cliff issue continue to have impasse. There's sign of improvement in Euro zone but still not out of the woods yet. Is China slowing down drastically - yes but they are also showing encouraging data lately. can they maintain it? again who knows:)
I rather be on the optimistic side but I'm also a realist thus if there's a sell down I make sure I have some $$$ to scoop up some firesales.

Greenspan was and is still an idiot and so are the rest of the Republicans - he was the most incompetent Fed chairman the US ever had with his loose monetary policy by supporting W Bush Tax cuts and repeatedly lowering interest rate. He singlehandedly contributed to the housing mess with his recommendations of the cheap adjustable sub prime rates then had the interest rates rise to a level where the borrowers could not pay and did not realized until it was too late that we had a huge crisis. Low interest and high leverage proved to be the killing combination for a growth (greed) driven industry. If you can borrow $100 putting up only $1 worth of collateral and enjoy the privilege of 1% interest on the balance you too might be tempted to put the easy money at risk in hopes of the big jackpot. The financial industry abandoned risk management in favor of a casino mentality. The rapid rise of commodities like gold and oil was another reason due to the loose monetary policy.

How he survived four presidents? Greenspan refused to question Reagan on supply side theory, helped Bush Sr with the deficit, taxation and recession, warned Clinton about deregulating banks, chided W Bush about deficit spending and that's how he survived four administrations. Everyone assumed he knew what he was doing, when in fact he was placating bad policy while experimenting with his own private theories. He also chose to believe in the theory of economic expansionism. That an economy can maintain an unending period of growth providing inflation is controlled and the Fed is allowed to tweak interest rates. We and Greenspan have seen that an overzealous economy produces bubbles, bubbles burst and weaken the overall economic fabric. The adherent tension fails and the macroeconomic organisms fall in disarray. The reasons America is in it's present dire situation is because Mostly of Greenspan's policies when he was the Fed chairman and now he wants to talk about the fiscal cliff? There's no two ways about it,taxes will have to be raised, spending cuts will have to be enforced and if the Republicans are still at a loss as to why they lost the presidency and failed to gain on the Senate and lucky that they managed to hold on to the house despite losing a few more seats, they will be out of the House in 2 years!
