Glovemakers raise ASP guidance as virus lingers
CORPORATE NEWS
Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020
In its research note yesterday, UOBKH pointed out that the likes of Top Glove Corp Bhd, Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd and Hartalega Holdings Bhd (Big-3) have revised upwards their ASP guidance for the months of August and September. It noted that Top Glove, in particular, had raised its spot sales mix to 20%-30% from 10%-15% previously.
PETALING JAYA: Amid the unabated concerns over the Covid-19 outbreak, major glovemakers have revised upwards their average selling price (ASP) guidance for the next two months.
However, industry spot sales ASPs remain unchanged at two to three times contract ASPs, UOB Kay Hian Research (UOBKH) noted.
“With the higher revisions and spot sales mix, we expect 2020 industry blended ASP to increase by 69% year-on-year (y-o-y) (versus 23% y-o-y previously), ” the brokerage said.
“Order visibility as reflected by delivery lead time is further extended to 540 days (from 300 days in June). Contracted capacity for the second half of 2021 is almost secured. This suggests new orders being placed may only be received in 2022, ” it added.
Kossan, on the other hand, had accelerated its capacity addition for 2021 to 35.4 billion pieces per annum, up 10.4% y-o-y.
“Apart from that, Kossan and Supermax Corp Bhd appear to be on track to be included in the FBM KLCI as a component stock during the November 2020 review. The MSCI review in August is likely to see higher weightage for glove manufacturers as well, ” UOBKH said.Meanwhile, the brokerage noted that while the discovery of a preventive vaccine against Covid-19 could dent investor sentiment towards glovemakers, such a development would unlikely have an immediate impact on glove demand and subsequently the ASPs.
It added that a kneejerk selling in glove stocks could represent an opportune entry for for investors.
UOBKH has maintained an overweight stance on the glove sector, with Top Glove as its top sector pick.
“We like it for its increasing allocation to spot sales mix coupled with above-industry expansion growth. We also like Kossan as the company, a laggard, is playing catch-up with its peers in its ASP pricing, and has unveiled plans to accelerate capacity expansion, and is on track to being included in the FBM KLCI as a constituent stock, ” it explained.
It has maintained a hold call for Hartalega, with a target price of RM19.50. Its target price for Top Glove stood at RM36.90 and for Kossan it was RM19.40.“Our normalised valuations based on 2022 suggest there is support to existing valuations. Hence, the reward-to-risk trade-off still appears attractive to us at this juncture, ” UOBKH said.
Factoring in the recent ASP guidance, higher spot sales mix and accelerated capacity addition, UOBKH said it expects peak earnings to grow 850% against 2019. In addition, it noted its earnings estimated for the sector are 80% above consensus estimates, leaving ample positive surprises over the few quarters ahead.

Elevated Demand for Glove.
Globally, it was reported today that nations in Asia imposed new restrictions while an abrupt British quarantine on travellers from Spain threw Europe's summer reopening into disarray, as the world confronted the prospect of a second wave of Covid-19 infections.
It was reported that in the US, which is still dealing with its first wave as infection rates have climbed since June, President Donald Trump's national security adviser Robert O'Brien became the most senior official to test positive. The White House said Trump had not interacted with him in days and was not at risk.
"Surges were reported in several countries that previously appeared to have the virus under control. Australia recorded a record daily rise. Vietnam was forcing tens of thousands of tourists to evacuate the central city of Danang. Mainland China, where the virus first emerged late last year, confirmed the most locally transmitted cases since early March.
"Hong Kong banned gatherings of more than two people, closed restaurant dining and made face masks mandatory in public. A surge of new infections in Spain, another early epicentre of the pandemic, prompted Britain on Saturday to order all travellers from there to quarantine for two weeks, undoing months of preparation for Europe's reopening to tourism," Reuters reported.
Bloomberg, quoting UBS Group analysts Nicole Goh and Joseph Koh as writing in a note, reported on Monday (July 27) that Southeast Asian glove makers have the ability to raise average selling prices by 15% to 70% in the third quarter of 2020 due to elevated demand.
"Hospitals also expect prices (for gloves) to be 25% higher year-on-year in the upcoming month.
"UBS maintains neutral rating on Top Glove. Sees strong near-term earnings momentum, though tight raw-material supply and new capacity could impact long-term margins," Bloomberg reported.

KUALA LUMPUR (July 28): Ahead of the mandatory requirement for Malaysians to wear face masks effective Aug 1, manufacturers and industry leaders remain confident that they would be able to meet an anticipated soaring demand.
Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the industry has adequate capacity, while some companies have built up stocks.
"There are companies that have expressed interest to venture into face mask manufacturing. So, there should be no issue of insufficient supply,” he told Bernama.
The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry last week told the Dewan Rakyat that there was sufficient supply of face masks, based on its monitoring and surveillance on production and distribution and supported by import.
Top Glove Corporation Bhd, for example, has three machines which are already fully operational with a total capacity of 8.8 million pieces of face mask per month.
Its executive chairman Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai said the world’s largest glove maker started producing face masks in June and manufacturing mainly for internal consumption.
"To ensure our internal supply of raw materials is sufficient, we source from several suppliers. We also have enough land and space for capacity expansion," he said.
Nevertheless, he said there could be a shortage arising from urgent buying at the initial stage of the directive for the public to wear face masks in crowded public places and public transport.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ruling was made following the increase in positive Covid-19 cases and lower compliance to standard operating procedures among the public.
"If this happens, it will be temporary and for the immediate term only.
"With e-commerce, face masks are widely available online and countries such as China will have sufficient supply to cater to any surge in demand," Lim said, adding that the government was also limiting the export of face masks.
On product accreditation from the Medical Device Authority Malaysia, in accordance with the Medical Device Act, he said it takes time particularly for new manufacturers to register with the body as this requires ISO 13485 certification.
"It is important to bear in mind that in addition to wearing a face mask, there is a need to also ensure the masks are worn correctly and disposed of safely, and to continue practising social distancing as well as washing hands frequently and properly," he said.
Last month, experts from the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries and Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society suggested that face masks available in the market should be properly graded and meet the necessary standards to provide protection from Covid-19.
In terms of offering protection from Covid-19, Lim explained that face mask performance is mainly determined by Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) and Sub-micron Particulate Filtration Efficiency (PFE); the higher the BFE and PFE, the better its performance.
"BFE and PFE for Top Glove’s face masks (Top Mask) is above 95%,” he said.
He cautioned that some face masks may have a high degree of BFE and PFE but do not meet the medical grade standard as they are unable to comply with other parameters such as differential pressure, flammability or splash resistance test.
"We recommend that Malaysia considers developing a standard set of requirements for face masks to ensure consistently good product quality and performance, and setting up more accredited face mask testing facilities," he said.

dhnn81 Ansell has hundreds of glove patents!
Check this out: https://www.ansell.com/ja/en/why-ansell/patents
Even world largest glovemaker has much less patents!
Patents will last for 20 years and prevent anyone in the world to produce the same design and material.
Careplus could be producing some of those glove patents.

Alvaro Most important is the EN standard .
( EN 420 )
The partnership with Ansell smooths this out.
So any hatchling glove company can’t start selling in the European Union .
So , don’t have to worry about mushrooming competition .
By the time they are done with paperwork , Covid will already have cucu cicit ready .

They had embarked into capacity expansion much earlier, they had partnered with Ansell, they had lowered their production cost and they also had bought hotel/shophouses for workers accommodation in preparation of the expansion in 2021.
Partnership with Ansell will give them more exposure to the global market, Ansell's best practices, Ansell's marketing strategies, production cost optimisation and raw material procurement efficiency!
They think many steps ahead!

KUALA LUMPUR (July 26): As the domestic travel and tourism industry slowly bounces back, the world’s best low-cost airline AirAsia says it is experiencing green shoots of a promising recovery after being severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
AirAsia.com chief executive officer (CEO) Karen Chan said although the journey might be tough, the airline company would ramp up efforts accordingly to attract more customers whilst realigning its business priorities from travel to businesses related to local consumption.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, AirAsia has launched businesses such as Ourshop, an e-commerce marketplace; Ourfarm, an e-commerce platform to help connect farmers directly with businesses; as well as Ourfood, a seamless, fuss-free and affordable solution for customers and restaurateurs.
“Given the new reality we are all facing, AirAsia.com’s top priority is to maintain a growth trajectory amidst a slowdown in the economy.
“Domestic travel will be the key driver of sales until borders reopen and quarantine restrictions are relaxed. This, in turn, is a great opportunity for AirAsia.com given that the airline holds 73 per cent of Malaysia's market share,” she told Bernama.
AirAsia has survived for 18 years in a hyper-competitive industry and became the leader of the low-cost carrier segment by providing the best prices, best ASEAN connectivity and best customer experience, she noted.
Chan said after being grounded for almost two and a half months, with the industry entering a consolidation cycle, AirAsia would continue its core value proposition – providing value so that customers could enjoy travel services and lifestyle products at unbeatable prices.
“As AirAsia.com becomes ASEAN’s fastest growing travel and lifestyle platform, we anticipate that our airline revenues will gradually stabilise as non-airline revenues become our key growth driver and business priority.
“At that point, we will no longer be competing as just an airline carrying travellers across ASEAN -- we will be a super ecosystem of products and services, enabling the ASEAN traveller to go, live it!,” she pointed out.
Higher load factor
Chan said AirAsia.com’s customer research has found that close to 45 per cent of travellers want to travel immediately and flight searches on its website have increased by more than 150 per cent.
She said the company’s domestic travel promotions have been very well-received, selling over 250,000 seats in June, and it would continue to ramp up capacity.
“During end-May to early-June, we were only flying a single-digit percentage…last month we started ramping up to 20-25 per cent, and now in July going forward, we are looking at close to 40-50 per cent.
“With restrictions on activities being lifted, we hope to achieve a load factor of between 70 per cent and 80 per cent by the third quarter,” she said.
AirAsia has also introduced numerous initiatives to help the government stimulate and revitalise the domestic travel industry such as the Unlimited Pass Cuti-Cuti Malaysia, offering guests to redeem unlimited flights within the airline domestic network across 16 destinations nationwide.
“The first of its kind in Asia, our launch in Malaysia and Thailand was a success, and a reflection of the strong latent demand within consumers to travel again.
“We sold over 200,000 passes altogether and have received many requests for the product to be introduced in other markets,” Chan said, adding AirAsia.com is looking forward to further launching in other markets such as Indonesia and the Philippines when flight restrictions have eased.
Another AirAsia innovative product is SNAP, a new flight+hotel combo booking platform that offers customers hassle-free, best-price-guaranteed deals with bigger savings.
Forming new partnerships
Chan said the real determinant for the aviation industry lies in the safe and efficient reopening of borders.
If the positive rebound in domestic travel is any indicator, international travel should follow the same trajectory once travel restrictions and quarantine requirements are lifted.
Given the interconnected nature of the ASEAN economy and that tourism collectively represents 15 per cent of the gross domestic product of the five largest ASEAN countries, AirAsia is looking forward to the reopening of borders, she said.
She also revealed that AirAsia is in the final stages of discussions with key international carriers to connect their European and Middle East Airlines (MEA) networks directly with AirAsia’s deep ASEAN network.
“ASEAN is our home and our turf, and international travel will help unlock the full synergies of our ecosystem.
“These strategic partnerships will complement our existing partnership with Kiwi.com, which provides a virtual interlining and connectivity optimisation engine to offer a one-stop-shop, best-price-guaranteed service for our customers,” she said.

In one freighter...120 tons of cargoes...around 60%...are medical related cargoes... gloves, PPE, masks, n others. Even with less pax n no pax aircraft almost 65%. Gloves itself from 10 palletised n 10 unitised cargoes...50% are gloves. Even pax seats n baggages cabins are loaded with masks cargoes n tightened down. Cargoes itself down only 5%, because of lack of capacity. Pax are down 90%.
