Founders of AirAsia Bhd are unlikely to lead a takeover offer for the budget airline, according to Maybank IB Research.

"This talk on privatisation has been circulating for a while, but we are inclined to think it is not probable," its aviation analyst Mohshin Aziz said in a note to clients today.

He cited two reasons. One is that AirAsia had recently announced an extraordinary general meeting to secure a mandate to buy back up to 10% of its shares.

"This effectively sending a message that the company is not for sale," said Mohshin.

"Secondly, none of the founders have accumulated shares during the downslide of the share price and the current stock price is already 58% higher than the recent low of 79 sen per share," he added.

"Even if this news has some truth to it, we think it is a challenge to secure financing. The privatisation will cost RM2.84 billion at the current share price and to obtain bank financing at present slowing macro environment could be tough.

“私有化或没有私有化，有一点可以肯定的是，买空型投资者今日将争先恐后补仓，我怀疑补仓情况很快会出现。因此，市场或将出现防护下行风险，风险回报也更为引人注目。”
