The ringgit gained as local stocks and most Malaysian government bond prices rose.

Despite improving global risk appetite, traders hesitated to buy the ringgit, given fragile sentiment on the country because of a corruption scandal swirling round Prime Minister and indebted state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

A senior Malaysian bank trader also doubted there would be any improvement in risk sentiment, before the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week.

"Money is flowing back to developed markets from emerging markets. How can we stop that?" said the trader.

LONDON: The current slump in emerging market stocks and currencies has reached "crisis proportions" the Institute of International Finance warned on Thursday.

The Washington-based finance industry body said China's woes had been a key catalyst in the fast-moving rout, which has seen MSCI's global emerging market stocks index slump 40 percent.

Vast swathes of emerging market currencies have also taken a battering, but rather than just making countries more competitive, for some it has created terms of trade and inflation problems.

"The decline in equity and currency values across a range of emerging markets has reached crisis proportions," the IIF said, adding that emerging market bond markets could also soon come under pressure.

The current problems had compounded the strains of lacklustre worldwide growth and with many developing countries' economic models unbalanced and unsustainable, the problems were likely to last for some time.

Even if the Federal Reserve were to hold off from raising U.S. interest rates in September - another major uncertainty contributing to recent emerging market market volatility - it was only likely to offer "short-term relief," the IIF said.

"The deepening monetary divergence between the U.S., the UK and the rest of the world is likely to lead to further bouts of volatility," it said. - Reuters

Former AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) chief executive officer (CEO) Azran Osman-Rani has clarified that he was not involved in the fictitious RM7 million payments made to a service provider, which happened during his tenure as CEO of the long-haul low-cost carrier.

Azran, who is currently CEO of iflix Malaysia, pointed out that AAX’s external auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers did not report any irregularities in the airline’s financials when he was heading the company between 2010 and 2014.

“In all those years, we were audited by an international reputable auditor. And as a CEO, I have to rely on what the auditor finds. In all those years, they never raised anything,” he told digitalEdge DAILY on the sidelines of the World Capital Markets Symposium yesterday.

“It’s quite shocking that this was something that the same auditor never picked up, and suddenly after I left, they picked it up. It’s strange,” he said.

Azran, 43, added that the board should have probably elected a “more independent auditor” if there were really an issue.

Asked if he would cooperate with the authorities on the matter, he said: “Absolutely. I have nothing to hide.”

Azran said that he was kept in the dark regarding the issue, besides what had been disclosed to Bursa Malaysia.

“I don’t have any other details other than the Bursa statement. I have been kept in the dark. It is clearly someone else, and I don’t know what the police report entailed,” he said.

To recap, AAX announced recently its internal and external auditors discovered 24 payments totalling RM7.01 million made to a service provider that were established to be fictitious.

The airline said the payments were authorised by a person in a management position within the company, but did not name the person.

Subsequently, AAX lodged a police report and sought legal advice on the possible courses of action the company can take to recover the losses.

马零售调查行基于次季零售销量写下新低，第4度下修今年的销量增长预测，目前预测为3.1%。

该行在文告指出，由于令吉走软和政治因素带来冲击，导致消费情绪低迷，进而拖累我国零售销量前景蒙尘。

斋戒月销量减少

调查显示，斋戒月首两周销量减少，直至斋戒月最后两周才增长，但销量不如去年。

调查也显示，我国次季零售销量按年共下跌11.9%，这也远逊于大马零售商协会（MRA）成员的预测，即平均3%的增长率。

“消费税的打击比预期更强，消费者在次季缩紧银根，观望零售货物和服务的售价变化，而且也在等待商家推出更多促销活动。”

消费税落实制度让消费者和商家引起的混乱，如预付卡充值、饮食业服务费和临时对商品征税等问题，也为零售销量带来沉重压力。

调查显示，在消费税落实下受到影响的所有零售业次领域，包括杂货零售商、服装、玩具、礼品、手机、家具及电子与电器产品等行业，许多零售商生意跌幅介于20%至50%。

Malaysia’s ringgit fell the most in a week amid a global selloff in equities and as energy prices slumped on signs China’s economy is slowing.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index of stocks dropped more than 1% yesterday, raising concern more foreign investors will exit after dumping about US$3bil in shares this year. Brent crude tumbled 8.5% on Tuesday in its biggest one-day slide since 2011 before data forecast to show US stockpiles increased. The price of the commodity has halved in the past year, cutting Malaysia’s export earnings and contributing to a 24% slump in the ringgit. A report on Tuesday showed China’s official factory gauge fell to a three-year low last month.

An overnight drop in emerging-market currencies and a retreat in Brent “should see Asia falling back in line with the rest of the world where risk appetite remains impaired,” said Nizam Idris, the Singapore-based head of foreign-exchange and fixed-income strategy at Macquarie Bank Ltd. “Oil has been volatile.”

The ringgit weakened 1.4% to 4.2227 a dollar as of 10.08am in Kuala Lumpur, the steepest decline in Asia, according to prices from local banks compiled by Bloomberg.

Most emerging Asian currencies slid on Monday and were set to post steep monthly losses as top US. Federal Reserve officials left the door open for an interest rate hike. in September and Chinese stocks tumbled again.

South Korea's won fell as foreign investors continued to sell local stocks.

Foreign investors sold the Indonesian rupiah, while the Singapore dollar skidded with hedge funds selling.

Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer, speaking at the central bank' conference in Wyoming, said recent volatility in global markets quickly could ease and possibly pave the way for a rate hike.

Chinese stocks tumbled ahead of official factory activity data on Tuesday which is likely to deepen fears of a sharp slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.

Activity in China's manufacturing sector in August likely shrank at its fastest pace in three years, a Reuters poll showed.

"Jitters over emerging Asian currencies may persist unless we see a recovery in Chinese data, given doubts over China's ability to support the economy," said Jeong My-young, Samsung Futures' research head in Seoul.

Investors are also awaiting key U.S. economic data later this week including August nonfarm payrolls for clues on the timing of U.S. tightening.

Emerging Asian currencies, however, are unlikely to find much support, some analysts said. "A strong payrolls report might be required for the Fed to pull the trigger in September but even if tightening is delayed a few months it will not be positive for EM FX," analysts for Societe Generale said in a note.

"As long as we in the waiting game and uncertainty is prolonged, EM FX will be unable to rally on a sustained basis."

Asian shares fell on Monday and looked set for their worst monthly performance in three years after top Federal Reserve officials kept the door open for an interest rate hike in September and Chinese stock markets took a fresh tumble.

Global markets are bracing for Chinese data on Tuesday which is expected to show the world's second-largest economy is continuing to lose momentum.
