Interestingly enough, some banks argue that if oil prices rebound too quickly, the oil industry won’t make the production cuts needed to balance the market. That would lead to a longer period of low oil prices than it would otherwise. If oil prices rise too much further “we see risk of counterproductive behavior that would push off recovery and make us more bearish 2H15 and 2016. …Even a bounce may give producers and creditors hope and reinforce bad behavior,” Morgan Stanley stated in response to the latest rally.

Although prices are rising, the oil industry is not out of the woods yet. Saudi Arabia did indeed raise prices for its oil being exported to the United States, but it also slashed its prices by almost $1 per barrel to oil heading to Asia. The move suggests that the de-facto OPEC leader is playing the long game and is still fighting for market share. Other OPEC members have increased their exports to Asia, and China in particular has increased its imports to take advantage of soft prices. But Saudi Arabia, learning the lessons of the 1980’s when it lost market share, is stubbornly fighting for every sale. That muddies the picture as far as the oil rally goes, so stay tuned.

Saudi Arabia's move to slash the price it charges in Asia for its oil this week to the lowest in more than a decade is the latest aggressive action by Gulf states to defend market share in the world's top oil consuming region.

Oil began to rise last week from near-six-year lows, in part due to a downturn in U.S. rig activity that could eventually dampen rapid growth in shale oil production, only to tumble on Wednesday.

Other participants said it was too soon to expect a sustained price rise. "There's no basis for a sustained recovery at the moment," said Carsten Fritsch, analyst at Commerzbank.

Christopher Bellew, a senior broker at Jefferies Bache, also did not expect prolonged gains. "I think prices will consolidate around these sorts of levels before moving lower. It takes a lot of time for fewer rigs to translate into lower oil production," he said.
