Another casualty of the coronavirus pandemic: Trust in science

President Trump repeatedly making false and exaggerated claims about the new therapeutics. He called them a cure, which they’re not. He said he was about to approve them — a premature promise given that the FDA’s career scientists are charged with reviewing the applications.

Politics has thoroughly contaminated the scientific process. The result has been an epidemic of distrust

The White House has repeatedly meddled with decisions by career professionals at the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other science-based agencies. Many of the nation’s leading scientists, including some of the top doctors in the administration, are deeply disturbed by the collision of politics and science and bemoan its effects on public health.

Coronavirus: WHO warns of 'no silver bullet' amid vaccine search

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that while there is hope for a vaccine against Covid-19, one might never be found.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news briefing there was "no silver bullet at the moment - and there might never be".

Remdesivir and interferon fall flat in WHO’s megastudy of COVID-19 treatments

One of the world’s biggest trials of COVID-19 therapies released its long-awaited interim results yesterday—and they’re a letdown.

None of the four treatments in the Solidarity trial, which enrolled more than 11,000 patients in 400 hospitals around the globe, increased survival—not even the much-touted antiviral drug remdesivir.

Scientists at the World Health Organization (WHO) released the data as a preprint on medRxiv last night, ahead of its planned publication in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Coronavirus update: Global COVID-19 cases top 39 million as trial of promising therapy finds it does not stop patients dying

The trial, conducted by the World Health Organization, found that remdesivir, as well as hydroxychloroquine, and lopinavir/ritonavir and interferon had “little or no effect” on overall mortality, ventilation, and length of hospital stay among 11,330 participating patients.

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized remdesivir as a COVID-19 treatment, based on a clinical study conducted in the U.S. that found the drug could reduce recovery times.
It had also granted an emergency use authorization to hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment although it was rescinded this summer.

The WHO study was first reported by the Financial Times on Thursday.

Coronavirus pandemic could last until 2023, scientist warns

Coronavirus could be part of daily life for the next three years and may not disappear even if a vaccine is found, a leading scientist has warned.

Professor Hendrik Streeck, who is a prominent German virologist, predicted the world would see regular outbreaks of Covid-19 until at least 2023.

The virologist led the pandemic response in Heinsberg, one of Germany’s worst-hit districts, using the town of Gangelt to study how the virus spread and how it could be contained.

He told the Daily Record: ‘This virus is not disappearing. It has now become part of our daily lives.

A vaccine against COVID-19 may be ready by year-end, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday. "We will need vaccines and there is hope that by the end of this year we MAY have a vaccine." Tedros said in final remarks to the WHO's Executive Board, without elaborating.

Nine experimental vaccines are in the pipeline of the WHO's COVAX global vaccine facility that aims to distribute 2 billion doses by the end of 2021.

Rich world could be close to normal by late 2021 IF vaccine works, Bill Gates says

"We still don't know whether these vaccines will succeed," Gates, 64, told The Wall Street Journal CEO Council.

COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca/Oxford University are two of the leading candidates in the race to be first to get regulatory approval in the West.

Experts have warned against authorising the emergency use of vaccines that have not completed testing, citing a lack of understanding about longer-term efficacy and potential side effects.

Trump says vaccine weeks away.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said a vaccine against the deadly coronavirus could be three or four weeks away, despite caution from some U.S. public health officials about that accelerated timeline.

For one thing, only time can ensure the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Subjects in the trials have to go through months to see if they can get infected with the coronavirus and if so, how they respond to it.

Researchers also monitor subjects for any adverse side effects.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, once experts deem a vaccine effective and safe, it goes into the manufacturing and quality control phases.

The whole process usually takes between 10 and 15 years, but for Covid-19, this has been compressed into about two years. Approval, however, does not mean availability.

even with the fast-tracking of the vaccine, there were certain steps that should not be removed, adding that respective countries’ approval bodies will have to test and approve it, on top of producing enough doses.

To be truly effective, the Covid-19 vaccine needs to have a success rate of 50%, either by preventing infection or by reducing the severity of the disease. It also needs to have 60% to 70% coverage among the population.
