MOBILE telecommunications operator XOX Bhd has launched a free smartphone mobile services application called Voopee, which will allow its users to communicate with fellow users for free via voice, text and multimedia (pictures, emoticons) using WiFi or mobile data packages. The company is confident that Voopee will be able to net 500,000 users by year-end. XOX Bhd's group chief executive officer Ng Kok Heng said the target market is young techies (technologi-cally-savvy youths) and the growing market of Malaysian travellers as they have been found to leverage on such mobile apps to avoid incurring call charges. "When you are overseas, for example, the roaming charges are 20 to 30 times higher per minute. With Voopee, once you download the app, the software will generate a choice of a few three-plus-eight Malaysian numbers that you can choose from. "Once you've selected a number, you can enable the call forward function, where all your calls will then be forwarded to your Voopee number (created virtually without a need for any additional SIM card). You can disable your Voopee call forward function to resume using your own mobile number," explained Ng. He said the Voopee connection will deliver high-definition voice quality, adding that he is confident the app will take off in a big way in, among others, Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong - countries often visited by Malaysian travellers. Voopee to Voopee calls are free but a call from a Voopee to a non-Voopee number will incur a 10 sen per minute charge (short messaging services are 10 sen each). XOX Bhd is marketing Voopee via social media and targeting the travel sector as well as the youth. Currently, the app is available only for Android smartphones at Google Play Store, Ng said, adding that the Apple iOS version will be available at the end of the first quarter. XOX Bhd currently has 300,000 active mobile phone service subscribers

Pada tahun 2012 yang lepas, kami pernah menulis mengenai XOX-Voopee. Walaupun telah boleh digunakan sejak tahun tersebut, namun ia dilihat hanya diperkenalkan secara rasminya oleh pihak XOX baru-baru ini.

Bagi yang tidak mengenali XOX-Voopee, ia merupakan salah satu perkhidmatan mudah-alih tanpa SIM yang berfungsi lebih kurang seperti Yes Life, dimana pengguna diberikan sebuah nombor telefon khas, dan boleh menghubungi sesiapa sahaja melalui sokongan VoIP, permesejan dan sebagainya.

Seperti biasa, ia bergantung kepada talian internet. Perkara ini sekaligus menjadikan XOX Voopee sebagai salah satu alternatif menarik bagi mereka yang merantau dan ingin membuat panggilan kembali ke rumah di Malaysia.
Berbeza dengan tahun 2012, kini harga yang ditawarkan adalah lebih berpatutan, dimana mereka mengenakan caj sebanyak 10 sen seminit untuk panggilan ke talian tetap atau mudah-alih, dan 10 sen untuk SMS. Pengguna perlulah mempunyai sambungan internet sebelum dapat menggunakan perkhidmatan ini, sama ada melalui rangkaian WiFi ataupun melalui Mobile Internet menggunakan talian telefon sedia ada.

Buat masa ini, Voopee ditawarkan hanya untuk Android, dan versi iOS dilihat akan hadir tidak lama lagi.
