China finds power clipped in dealing with Malaysia on MH370 probe, says report
China, which has been at the forefront of the global search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, now finds its strength limited as the crisis enters its third week, the New York Times reported today.
"The painful process of working with Malaysia in searching for the airplane and investigating what went wrong in the early hours of March 8 has revealed the limits of China’s power, influence and technological and military might in the region, despite its rapid rise as a rival to the United States and American strategic dominance of the Western Pacific," said the paper.
Two-thirds of the 239 people on board the plane are Chinese nationals, and Beijing has so far deployed 21 satellites and a fleet of naval ships to help in the search.
The New York Times said Malaysia was keeping other nations, including China, at arm's length in the search efforts, to the frustration of the Chinese government.
"That tension is reflected in the frequent condemnations of Malaysia that have appeared in the Chinese state news media.
"China is out of its comfort zone, no longer in the position of strength from which it usually deals with smaller Asian nations, including Malaysia," it was reported.
The daily said despite the strong ties between both countries, China is now "desperately prodding" Malaysia to share information to allow it a role in the investigation so that it could appease Chinese families whose loved ones are still missing.
“If you don’t push them, they won’t move,” Zhu Zhenming, a scholar of Southeast Asia at the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, was quoted as saying about Malaysian authorities.
"It’s mostly to do with their administrative management capabilities, but also their culture."
China's frustration has even come from its officials who resort to diplomacy in their remarks.
The Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang had reportedly told the media last week that although Malaysia had insufficient technologies and experience in responding to the incident, "they did their best".
But a scholar of Chinese politics said Malaysia's image had suffered.
"The image of the Malaysian government has dropped in the eyes of the Chinese government and the Chinese people," said Bo Zhiyue of the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore.
"Compared to the Malaysian government, the Chinese government is quicker and more responsive," he told the New York Times.
Bo said the saga reinforced the belief among the Chinese that their system "is in some ways superior to other systems in its efficiency".
The paper said the Chinese are also under pressure to solve the case of the missing MH370 following an incident in which 29 people were killed and 150 injured in a train station in China, blamed on terrorism.
China had tried to link the killing spree to activists in Xinjiang, a western province where ethnic Uighurs and the ruling ethnic Han have been clashing.
Although it was previously thought that MH370's disappearance was another act of terror, possibly by Uighurs, Chinese investigators have cleared its citizens from ties to militant groups, including the sole ethnic Uighur on board the plane.
Bo, however, said that both incidents are "national traumas" which have been beyond the control of Chinese authorities.
"It’s a little sensitive, and it seems a little embarrassing," he was quoted as saying.
"They need to make an extra effort to make it look like they’re taking it seriously and commit resources to find an answer to the problem." – March 22, 2014.

The ruckus sparked by upset relatives on Wednesday was just a minor part of a huge crisis.
COMMENT
MH370Wednesday’s chaos in the media room at the Hotel Sama Sama was unprecedented. No one from the local or international press could have seen it coming.
Several individuals from among the relatives of Chinese passengers on board the MH370 stormed into the room with banners and screamed in agony and shouted in anger as they demanded clearer information about the fate of loved ones, which was still unknown although 26 countries were involved in the world’s largest search and rescue mission.
“They give different messages everyday,” said one of them. “We want the flight to be found. We need information and we can’t stand the waiting any more.”
Frustration boiled over into disorder soon when a group of security officers entered the room to stop them from repeating allegations that authorities said were false.
Cameras flashed and video and audio recorders were turned when they were they were dragged off from the media centre to be temporarily locked inside another room. Police and other security officers were not able to take them out of the hotel as the front door was sealed completely by journalists.
Almost instantly, recordings of the Chinese being pulled away were uploaded to the Internet, and a war of words ensued all over Facebook and Twitter.
Some have blamed the Chinese families for the melee, saying they had failed to understand how hard the Malaysian government had been working to resolve the mystery of MH370.
Some have accused the police of unprofessional behaviour in their treatment of the grieving relatives.
Another set of people have condemned the government for flip flopping with its answers since the first of the daily press conferences.
Perhaps no one really deserves blame for Wednesday’s pandemonium.
It is true that the relatives who started the pandemonium were not the only ones suffering from the tragedy, but one would have to stand in their shows before making any statement of condemnation. Losing people you love is painful, and not knowing what happened to them is worse.
As for the police, they were caught off guard, like almost everyone else.
The reporters and photographers were just doing their job. It was the most natural thing to try to get comments from the grieving relatives, and it had to be done even if it meant ignoring orders from policemen and pushing them away.
The crisis is unprecedented in its magnitude, at least in the Malaysian experience, and until the plane is found, we will have to suspend our judgment on the conduct and utterances of everyone involved.
Alfian ZM Tahir is a FMT team member who witnessed the melee on Wednesday.

We cannot blame it on the international media for the bad publicity that we are getting over the way how Najib and Hishammuddin handle the missing aircraft. Just observe how the Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott spoke in parliament, while his defence minister, David Johnstone said “something definite” would be known within 48 hours. This is what the world wants to know: A firm decision and a timeline.
Until today, despite being prompted by DAP Supremo, Lim Kit Siang, neither Najib nor Hishammuddin has the guts to brief the parliament about this national crisis! Where are we heading to? And Mahathir should take cognizance that these two cousins were under his tutelage for over two decades.
One can say that Najib may have his Rosmah baggage, but what about Hishammuddin, whose wife was strangely spared from Teresa Kok’s Chinese New Year talkshow? I am sure that even if Mahathir were to take over and be in charge of the SAR, he too will fail badly because of his character that pisses the international partners in the efforts to find the missing plane.
It can’t be that both senior politicians, Najib and Hishammuddin cannot brief the Malaysian parliament! They are in fact duty bound to brief the Malaysian lawmakers of this current national crisis that we are facing.

Dr M’s legacy for all the world to see
March 21, 2014
FMT LETTER: From Stephen Ng, via e-mail
So, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in his recent lecture at University Malaya wants to be remembered as the man who helped one percent of the country’s population become super-rich, while Najib Abdul Razak, his blue eye boy will be the Prime Minister who is impoverishing the middle- and lower-income group through his drastic subsidies cut and GST?
Mahathir must not forget his squabble with Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating in his early years as a prime minister. Keating had called him the ‘recalcitrant’, a word that many Malaysians initially took offence to in the early 90s. He was also snubbed by the US Vice President Al-Gore within the same decade. It cannot be that a national leader should come under the criticism of two world leaders.
Looking back, Mahathir was indeed the recalcitrant who has destroyed Malaysia. After nearly 60 years as a nation, we are still fighting who has the right over the use of the word ‘Allah’, and whether the State Enactments were meant to restrictvthe freedom of non-Muslims to use the so-called Islamic word or merely to protect the shallow-faith of Muslims from being easily influenced by words in the way people who are not Muslims.
We are still fighting over race and religion. With the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) that was introduced during his time, many of the people in his generation have been brainwashed that they cannot think beyond the coconut shell that they have found themselves in.
Mahathir said that it was not cronyism, but we as a nation, need the rich people. While it is true that there are some who have become philanthropists, and they deserve the respect from the people, there are others who are hoarding the limelight for the wrong reasons.
Recently, the son of Rosmah Mansor from her first marriage was in the limelight bringing shame to the country. At the same time, a British judge said that a Malaysian couple is clogging precious court time trying to contest a divorce in England. We can go on and on with a 101 examples but I’d like to remind Mahathir of his trip to Mozambique.
In Mozambique, Malaysians have a bad name. The then Southern Bank went on a delegation led by Dr Mahathir himself. It started a branch office there, which subsequently had to be closed down, with many Mozambicans felt they were cheated of their life’s savings!
Not to mention the Perwaja failure which cost the country billions of Ringgit, Mahathir was supposed to start another Proton factory in Mozambique, with his one ‘mega’ dreams to expand into the African market, but until today, Proton cars are still rare in that part of the world. This is what has happened to our country’s coffers over the entire period when he was prime minister.
Shame on Mahathir! His 22 years as prime minister has failed to build up the talents in the country to be able to handle the most difficult crisis. This is exactly what we are seeing in the past two weeks. Since the MH370 aircraft went missing, the country has come under heavy criticisms from within (both politicians and ordinary men on the street) as well as harsh condemnation from people who understand the airline industry well.
As rakyat, when we read these stories from the international media, one thing is sure: We have totally lost our confidence in our present cabinet and the ruling coalition. As one celebrated Malaysian author puts it: “Confidence in our leadership is brittle, and it takes little for frustrations to boil over.”
In my opinion, Barisan Nasional has long overstayed the Malaysian hospitality, and God is fair, He will make sure that our leaders reap what they sow. If the same people continue to lead the country, it will go through one crisis after another until a new Government sanctioned by the rakyat takes over.
Throughout the entire period, Najib was more interested with his chicken talk, rather than to take charge of the search and rescue (SAR) efforts. He is giving more time to talk about a RM1 a bird ‘cock-and-bull’ story than to try to recover the missing aircraft with 239 people on board. In the spiritual sense, I guess, Najib does not even realise that the blood of these people are on his head.
Just before he kicks the bucket, Mahathir should realise that the Australians are the people who came to our aid to fight the Communists during the Emergency. Now, with the missing MH370, it is also the Australians who are working around the clock to help relocate the missing aircraft although it was the Malaysian maverick who antagonised Australia on a number of occasions during his tenure as prime minister.
As one looks back, Malaysia has been in the bad books of the international media because of a long history of bad relationships caused by Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself that his successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was trying to mend.

Malaysia has the income but not the government to reach developed maturity, says editor
Malaysia has set a target of entering the ranks of developed countries by 2020.
But judging by its handling of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 incident, many observers, including Ding Gang, a senior editor with The People's Daily, believe that target will not be met.
If it were just a matter of raising the per capita income, then based on its per capita income of RM36,000 in 2013, Malaysia is emplaced in the middle-income group (usually defined as bookended by a per capita GDP of US$1,000 (RM3,300) - US$12,000 (RM39,500), and has the potential of reaching developed maturity.
But according to the Asian Development Bank that created the concept, GDP per capita is only a superficial indicator.
A necessary attendant to determining the qualitative position of a country is its governance, particularly for middle-income nations that have to deal with problems particular to that postion – including rising labour costs, a lack of technological innovation, and subsequent economic stagnation.
Good governance in this regards means encouraging competition to maximize the value of talent and encourage innovation.
By such a measure, Malaysia's poor response following the disappearance of flight MH370 reflects the fact that the country is still way behind in terms of governance, said Ding Gang in his column in The People's Daily.
The intial chaotic dissemination of information, he said, reflects the flaws in Malaysia's system of governance.
And these flaws are a consequence of a lack of secularisation, an abundance of natural wealth that has disguised failings in leadership, and a racial approach to many aspects of Malaysian life, according to Ding Gang.
Malaysia's abundant raw products such as oil, rubber and oil palm provide a substanial proportion of the government's budget and expenditure, but it's a double-edged blessing because the wealth has disguised and fostered an inefficient governing class.
The writer goes on to note the racial bias or quotas in many aspects and sectors of Malaysian life – the lack of non-Muslim leaders and civil servants, the racial considerations in admission to universities and colleges, right down to the issuance of taxi licences.
The expressed motive of such race-tinted policies of promoting social stabity among the races effectively means the closing of opportunities for upward mobility and competition.
This in turn has led to corruption and the creation of a coddled conservative group with vested interests who do not want the boat rocked.
In 2001, then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that Malaysia was a Muslim country. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also declared in 2007 that Malaysia has never been a secular country.
The problem with mixing religion with politics, syaria law and civil law, is that it not only creates bifocal division, but also encourages the tendency to lean towards social conservatism, an illusory facade of harmony and unity.
What's dysfunctional is not elite politics itself, but a rigid system that is responsible for selecting the political elite and that does not encourage upstart talent. – March 20, 2014.

Netizens lash out at ban on Ultraman
Upset netizens have started blaming Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for the ban on a Ultraman comic book in Bahasa Malaysia for containing elements which could ostensibly jeopardise public order.
KUALA LUMPUR, March 6
He has been fighting off aliens and monsters for 48 years and never lost even once. But Ultraman has met his nemesis — Malaysia’s Home Ministry.
The beloved Japanese superhero character has succumbed to an order under the Publishing Prohibition Order.
The ministry today issued a ban on the publication of the Bahasa Malaysia edition of Ultraman the Ultra Power.
Bernama reported that the authorities said the comic book contained elements which could ostensibly jeopardise public order.
Citing the ministry’s statement, the ban order on the comic book took effect on Feb 18, under Section 7(1) of the Printing and Publications Act 1984.
“It is an offence under subsection 2 of Section 8 of the act, for any party to print, import, produce and reproduce, publish, sell, produce, circulate, offer for sale, distribute or be in possession for any intention, of the banned publication,” the statement read.
The ministry also warned that those found guilty can face imprisonment not exceeding 3 years or fined a maximum penalty of RM20,00 or both.
The ban, as expected, resulted in enraged netizens voicing their fury and disbelief in cyberspace.
This included Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who tweeted: “Apa salah Ultraman?” (What is Ultraman’s fault?)
Twitter user by the name @MyNamaIsLara wrote: “Eh? Kenapa Ultraman kena ban? What the f*** is wrong with you Zahid? Anak aku suka Ultraman lah!” (Why has Ultraman been banned? My kid loves Ultraman!)
Local celebrity and television host Daphne Iking also jumped on the bandwagon, tweeting: “I was never a fan of Ultraman but poor kids who are. :-( I wanna laugh at this ridiculous ruling… Butttttt I wonder what Ultraman would do.”
Another Twitter user, Muhammad Hafiz wrote: “LOL Malaysia LOL. Banning an Ultraman comic is so weird.”
Anas Zubedy, author of “The Quran and I” wrote: “Dear Home Ministry, when I was little I was crazy abt Ultraman but later as I grew up I noticed d YKK zippers & hv no urge 2 destroy Tokyo:)”
Tune Talk CEO, Jason Jonathon Lo wrote on his Twitter account: “Tis a sad day to find Ultraman banned in Malaysia. Maybe next, Archie, Lau Foo Tze, Garfield, Lat, Hellboy, Dilbert. Help us Al…er god.”

Apa Salah Ultraman, Tanya Khairy
Details
Published on Friday, 07 March 2014 09:05
Tindakan Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDN) yang mewartakan Perintah Larangan Penerbitan terhadap buku ‘Ultraman The Ultra Power’, mendapat kritikan sinis di laman maya.
Turut mendapat perhatian atas tindakan KDN tersebut adalah Menteri Belia dan Sukan, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.
Beliau melalui laman twitter turut mempersoalkan apa salah Ultraman.
"Khairy Jamaluddin@khairykj Apa Salah Ultraman?" beliau dipetik melalui twitter.

Ultraman ban raises flak
Alyaa Azhar
| March 7, 2014
Facebook users question as to how is Ultraman a threat to public order.
ultraman1PETALING JAYA: Thousands of Facebook users are unable to grasp the logic behind the ban on the publication of comic book Ultraman the Ultra Power, as evidenced from the numerous comments ridiculing the ban enforced by the Home Ministry (KDN).
As of today, hundreds of comments have been posted on FMT’s website and the article was shared 5,187 times on Facebook alone.
Facebook user Shihan Yap said the ban was utter nonsense especially since satellite television Astro has been showing the Ultraman television series for years.
“How can Ultraman be a risk factor to the public? Is it because there are some out there, the Ultramalays, Ultrachinese and Ultraindians who feel offended because the word “Ultra” is only for them? What’s next… Banning X-Men?”
The Home Ministry yesterday banned the comic which was said to contain elements that threatened public order.
The Malay-edition of the comic is published by Resign Publications and printed by Network Printers.
A photo circulated on Facebook allegedly shows a copy of the publication which contains a reference to Ultraman being compared to “Allah or all the Elders of Ultra heroes”.
Another user, Shan Nair Shivananthan questioned as to whether the Tom and Jerry animated series too would be banned.
“Is this for real? Where is this country heading to? What is to be banned next; Tom and Jerry because Tom chases Jerry all the time?” Shan asked.
“Let’s stop producing films like ‘KL Gangster’, too,” said Facebook user Daniel Khong.
User Foon Pheng Keong meanwhile was of the opinion that Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, former Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Nordin and academician Ridhuan Tee Abdullah were more dangerous than Ultraman.
“Ibrahim Katak, Zulkifli Nordin dan Ridhuan Tee are more dangerous than Ultraman. They are usually the ones who incite racial and religious issues. Their brains contain elements that can threaten public order.”
Allah’s name misused
However, Irfan Ampereox pointed out that the comic had portrayed the Muslim God’s name unnecessarily.
“Never in my life of watching Ultraman or reading its comics have I ever had to see any justification to use that name. If that name wasn’t in that book, KDN has no reason to ban the book.”
A fellow commenter, Wong Yew Fung said the issue was simply bad Google translation of the word God to Allah.
“Nothing to do with the Ultraman series, nor does it choose to portray the Muslim God’s name unnecessarily, it was just a mistake of the publisher of the Bahasa edition.”
According to the statement by the Home Ministry, the prohibition gazette was effective from Feb 18 following Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.
“It is an offence under subsection 2 of Section 8 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 for any person to print, import, produce, reproduce, publish, sell, distribute or possess the prohibited publication for any purpose.”
The statement said that those convicted of such an offence shall be liable to imprisonment not exceeding three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both.

The headline sounds funny but the issue itself is not.
"The Home Ministry has done what countless monsters and space aliens could not: Vanquish Ultraman."

Even a superhero cannot escape the long arm of the Home Ministry.
According to Bernama, the Home Ministry today gazetted a ban against the book ‘Ultraman The Ultra Power’, purportedly because it contained “elements which undermine public order”.

friends, as usual in any forum there are certain groups who together will say all good about this lousy counter with the devilish idea to tempt you the innocent ones to buy at a higher price. But once you kena caught, you had it....so don't be led to the slaughter house , be smart & invest wisely & not stupidly..this is my honest answer to you dummies.
I have wrote this below this afternoon. I want you all dummies to take a good read, reason yourself wisely & ask yourself & your friends if it's going to be a good buy. You act wisely, you be the judge.
....be reasonable friends, what can a company without any new business or add any new incomes, poor earnings and still want to dilute the earning by issuing new shares, do any good?As I said, if the CEO doesn't buy so many shares, will you all be interested? And then add some more blachan, ikan bilis , chilli like new bonus shares, dividend, all which are proposals only and mind you any company can make any proposals and wheather jadi or not is another matter, there are there to tempt you, that's all. Ask yourself if the company make really good money to declare a Bonus shares or pay dividend, earnings is a miserable 0.43 cents per share and still want to give bonus shares & didived? Think my friends, is it possible.
