Jordan to build mega power plant to increase energy self-dependence

AMMAN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Jordan said on Thursday it decided to grant a license to an international consortium of local, Estonian and Malaysian companies to build a 2.1-billion U.S. dollar power plant, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The 470-megawatts power plant will be fueled by oil shale, the country's key and strategic reserve that is able to diversify energy resources, said Jordan's energy minister Mohammad Hamed.

The power plant, which will be built by Estonia's Eesti Energia, Malaysia's YTL Power International and Near East Investments of Jordan, is expected to be operational in 2017.

The Kingdom, which imports about 96 percent of its energy at a cost of 2.8 billion U.S. dollars annually, or 21 percent of its gross domestic product, plans to increase self-produced energy to 60 percent by 2020.

CIMB Research sees YTL, Gamuda benefiting from KL-Singapore rail link

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research expects YTL Corp and Gamuda to benefit from the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high speed rail (HSR) project.

It said on Monday the Land Public Transport Commission's (SPAD) updates on the status of the HSR project highlighted that the targeted start of works was end-2015.

"We are positively surprised on the conviction, as the project has yet to complete its feasibility studies. Nevertheless, it is overall encouraging that the government remains committed in this high-impact project over the longer-run.

"We believe YTL Corp could be the main beneficiary if the award takes on a private-public partnership (PPP) and private finance initiative (PFI) (versus a full government financing ) given its balance sheet," it said.

CIMB Research added if the HSR takes off next year, it is a double bonus for the sector as MRT 2 should start too. Gamuda remains our top pick; the biggest beneficiary of the MRT, it added.

The research house added the time frame was "doable" if the RM30bil to RM40bil HSR takes on a PFI/PPP-type structure, as the additional government-type funding of over RM50bil will be focused on the remaining two MRT lines.

"We believe YTL Corp could leverage on a PFI/PPP-scheme given its strong balance sheet. For the tender phase, likely to begin in early 2015 based on SPAD's schedule, we would not discount other potential domestic competitors such as Gamuda as the group had previously said that it was keen to bid on the HSR too," it said.

CIMB Research maintains YTL on Add

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Research is maintaining its “Add” recommendation onYTL Corporation based on a financial year 2015 forecast, price-to-earnings ratio of 10.9 times.

The Securities Commission removed YTL from the list of Shariah-compliant stocks recently.  This resulted a drop in the share price, which fell to 6.9% with 90.8 million shares worth RM149mil.

The dip in the share price brought about a big buying opportunity.

The research house thinks that YTL and YTL Power (YTLP) should have been removed from the list six months ago as it is the holding company, and both have the same capital structure.

“The timing of the removal is unfortunate because YTL’s share price  prior to this had rallied over the past four weeks by 14% to reach a 52-week high,” it said.

On the other hand, YTL has a share buyback programme which bought shares on Febraury 25 at a price of RM 1.61.

“We believe that YTL will be more active in buying back shares at current levels,” the research house said.
