CIMB Thai Bank Public Company Limited, previously known as Bank Thai Public Company Limited, was established in 1998 with the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) as the major shareholder. On 5 November 2008, CIMB Bank Berhad became the largest shareholder in Bank Thai and on 4 May 2009, the Bank completed the registration of its new name: "ธนาคาร ซีไอเอ็มบี ไทย จำกัด (มหาชน)" in Thai and "CIMB Thai Bank Public Company Limited" in English. This name change reflects the official transition of Bank Thai from being a single company to a member of CIMB Group.
To leverage synergy of ASEAN leading banking group and be ready for the upcoming AEC, CIMB Thai Bank - Vientiane Branch has been opened to operation since 25 July 2014, aiming to serve as 'Gateway to ASEAN and Beyond' for Thai and foreign clients, particularly people of the Lao PDR, to access universal financial and investment solutions via such products and services as trade finance, credit facilities and international money transfers. CIMB Thai Bank - Vientiane Branch is located on Lane Xang Avenue Road in Vientiane CBD.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 15): CIMB Group Holdings Bhd closed down 5.1% while Malayan Banking Bhd closed up 0.9% in a market that closed the day slightly up.
Presumably, this is because CIMB’s chairman, Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, is the youngest brother of Malaysia’s former prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is now clearly in hot soup.
Nazir joined CIMB straight from university. His lineage no-doubt helped his progression within the firm, given that his father & uncle were both PMs, but it was no guarantee of success (checkout the siblings). He is clearly a very able banker. It is quite likely that in the early days of Najib’s administration, CIMB’s investment bank had an unfair advantage when it came to securing (& executing) deals. To be fair, they were at the time, the most competent i-bankers on the street. Indeed, in the run up to the 2013 elections, like me, Nazir was highly supportive of his brother’s reform policies. That all changed as soon as details of 1MDB began to leak out. Nazir did three things:
1. He put distance between himself & his brother, by moving to London.
2. He protected the bank by getting himself elevated from CEO to Chairman.
3. He made his feelings known about 1MDB & the need for change in Malaysia via interviews, speeches & social media.
Since he relinquished the CEO position, CIMB has undergone a complete change in its board & senior management line-up. It has also significantly downsized its investment banking division. The major drivers of CIMB’s profitability are now its consumer & corporate banking business in Malaysia & Indonesia.
The incoming finance minister has been a speaker at CIMB sponsored events, so that it is most unlikely that CIMB would in any way be punished by the new government. It is also highly unlikely that the new administration would intimidate companies & individuals, as appears to have been the practice in the latter part of the Najib administration. In any case, the major shareholders of CIMB are Khazanah Nasional Bhd 26%, Employees Provident Fund 13%, Permodalan Nasiona Bhd 10% & Kumpulan Wang Persaraan 6.5%.
The current weakness in the stock price is a great buying opportunity.
We like CIMB for the continued recovery of its Malaysian & Indonesian businesses. The stock currently trades on a FY18 P/E of 10.9x, P/B of 1.2x, ROE of 11.2%, with a dividend yield of 4.6%.
