It was mentioned above that "All in all, FY11 core earnings were up 7.2% y-o-y to RM231.0m despite higher leakages on minority interest (which more than doubled to RM45.9m due to ongoing works in Chhattisgarh) as the group registered a below average effective tax rate of 5.8% for the year." Can anybody explain on the meaning of "higher leakages on minority interest"?

Now the stock market's uptrend can be considered official.

The Standard & Poor's Composite Index of 500 stocks posted its biggest January point gain in its history. But what may be technically more important for the longer-term outlook is that the S&P 500's 50-day moving average, or 50 DMA, crossed above the 200 DMA for the first time since Aug. 11, 2011.

Many chart watchers believe this technical event--referred to as a "golden cross"--marks the spot when a bounce within a bear market transitions to a bull market. Brean Murray Carret technical analyst Frank Longman noted that "all sustained bull markets by definition come with the 50 DMA above the 200 DMA."

While the S&P 500 closed Tuesday down 0.60 point, or 0.05%, at 1312.41, for the month it rose 54.81 points, or 4.4%. The 50 DMA was 1257.80, according to data provided by FactSet Research, and has been rising steadily since mid October, while the 200 DMA came in at 1257.19.

Previous bullish crossovers didn't disappoint long-term followers. The last seven appearances, going back to December 1998, preceded average gains over the next two months of 5.5%. The largest gain--14%--followed the golden cross that appeared in June 2009, while the smallest gain--2.2%--followed the November 2004 event.

Meanwhile, bearish crossovers, known as a "death cross," have proved fatal to longer-term investors lately. The last time the 50 DMA crossed below the 200 DMA was Aug. 15, 2011, when the S&P 500 closed at 1204.49. Two months later, the index was down to just 1200.86, and it hasn't been that low since.

The one before that appeared on July 2, 2010, the same day the index closed at the low for the year at 1022.58. Two months later, the index was 6.6% higher.

Given the long-term nature of moving-average crossovers, and how well telegraphed they are, Longman said they should be seen as an "environmental indicator," rather than a short-term trading signal.

And because the death cross has proved unreliable lately, he cautioned investors from getting too bullish on the golden cross.

"We'll take it as a piece of evidence that the market may be transitioning back to bull, nothing more," Longman said.
