Supermax Corp Bhd, the world's second-largest rubber glove maker by volume, is diversifying into the manufacturing of contact lenses, confirming a report by The Edge Financial Daily on March 16.

At the press briefing on the second day of the Invest Malaysia 2015 conference, Supermax chief executive Datuk Seri Stanley Thai said the group is also venturing into the production of eye care and lense care products.

As for its contact lenses, Thai said those will be sold to markets in the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and Brazil via the firm's distribution centres overseas.

According to Thai, Supermax (fundamental: 1; valuation: 0.8) initiated the new venture in July last year and the move is expected to need a capital expenditure of some RM65 million by June or July this year.

The factory that manufactures contact lenses, he said, will be located in Selangor.

Business News
Supermax to venture into RM65mil contact lens business (Update)
Friday, 24 April 2015
By: S. PUSPADEVI
KUALA LUMPUR: Supermax Corporation Bhd's new RM65mil contact lens business would make the group the first Malaysian owned brand manufacturer for the product globally, said group managing director Datuk Seri Stanley Thai.

Thai said the product, which is currently undergoing research and development in United Kingdom, would complement the group's existing global distribution network in healthcare and medical device industry.

"We will launch our new contact lense product in the third quarter of this year.

"Although, i am not able to disclose the products contribution to our earnings at this point, this new industry is expected to last for the next 15 to 20 years," Thai told reporters after presenting a session at Invest Malaysia 2015 here today.

Thai said at present over 60 companies under its distribution network have agreed to be the distribitors of the new product.

He said the company would still continue to manufacture rubber gloves, as building market share was still its primary objective to sustain in the business.

He said the outlook of the rubber glove industy remained robust due to strengthening of the greenback against the ringgit, with the demand ratio for natural rubber and synthetic nitrile to stand at 55:45.

He expects margin compression of between 9 and 11 per cent to take place for the nitrile glove segment due to increase in additonal new capacities of this segment by other rubber glove manufacturers.

"The main challenges for the industy is still infrastructure and this is mainly water followed by electricity and gas," said Thai, adding that he hoped the state would not increase the tariffs without further notifications.

Having said that, he said the group is poised to capture higher market share in the nitrile glives through OBM and its existing network.

Supermax is involved in the manufacturing and the distribution of medical gloves and produces up to 16 billions pieces of gloves per year, meeting approximately 11% of the world demand for latex examination gloves.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that turkeys at four more commercial facilities--three in Minnesota and one in South Dakota--were confirmed to be infected with the fast moving H5N2 virus. The agency estimated that more than 390,000 turkeys between the plant would be lost to the disease or have to be euthanized as a precaution to prevent spread of the virus.

The latest cases come one day after USDA officials announced that H5N2 was found at a chicken laying facility in Osceola County, Iowa. Some 3.8 million layer hens at the farm affiliated with Sonstegard Foods Company will be euthanized to try to prevent the spread of the disease, according to the company.

The USDA had initially estimated that 5.3 million hens were affected. But the company has since confirmed that it was operating below capacity at the time avian flu was detected at its Iowa farm, said USDA spokeswoman Joelle Hayden.

"We went to great lengths to prevent our birds from contracting AI (avian influenza), but despite best efforts we now confirm many of our birds are testing positive for AI," the South Dakota-based Sonstegard Foods said in a statement.

We maintain our OVERWEIGHT rating on the rubber gloves sector. Rubber glove stocks under our coverage have performed well YTD, led by KOSSAN (+30%), SUPERMX (+26%), HARTALEGA (+23%), and TOPGLV (+21%). Nevertheless, we believe they still have further upside moving into 2Q15. The stage is set for rubber gloves makers to post decent-to-solid quarterly earnings growth over the next few quarters. Our investment case is based on: (i) resumption of earnings growth in coming quarters, underpinned by new capacity expansions matched and fueled by sustained demand for rubber gloves, led by nitrile gloves, (ii) favourable USD/MYR exchange rate, and (iii) the sustained low raw material prices especially latex. We expect glove makers to announce good sets of 1QCY15 numbers due to the commencement of new capacity starting from Jan 2014 and a favourable forex rate. As an indication, the recently announced Top Glove’s 2Q15 results which topped expectations were boosted by the strengthening of US dollar against MYR. In the meantime rubber glove players indicated that customers have been found for their new plants’capacities. Our Top Pick is HARTALEGA with a TP of RM9.50. We continue to like HARTALEGA for its: (i) highly automated production processes model, (ii) solid improvement in its production capacity and reduction in costs leading to higher margins compared to its peers, (iii) innovation in producing superior quality nitrile gloves, and (iv) positioning in a booming nitrile segment with a dominant market position. We also have OUTPERFORM calls for KOSSAN (TP: RM6.68) and SUPERMX (TP: RM2.75).

RHB comment on Hartalega
Hartalega has front-loaded its capex and we expect this to bring
forward their capacity expansion plans. Consequentially, management
has guided that Hartalega would be taking up a revolving credit facility
in FY16 (Mar) to ease cash flow for the firm. We switch our valuation to
DCF from one-year forward P/E. We downgrade to NEUTRAL (from Buy)
with a lower TP of MYR8.48 (vs MYR8.60), 0.3% downside.
  Downgrade to NEUTRAL on valuation grounds, with a revised TP of
MYR8.48 (0.3% downside, CAPM 8.9%, terminal growth rate 2%) vs
MYR8.60. Hartalega’s share price has risen 22% since Sep 2014.
Although Hartalega’s growth prospects remain intact, we downgrade our
recommendation as we believe that much of the positive news has been
priced in at current prices. Hartalega trades at 23.8x FY16F P/E, above
its historical 2SD trading band of 22.2x, while its peers are trading at an
average of 14.7x.

CIMB comment on Hartalega
From our recent meeting with Hartalega’s management, we felt that the
operating environment in the next two years will be tougher due to increasing
competition. To protect market share, the group aims to complete its new NGC
two years earlier, which will raise capex/year. To fund the accelerated
expansion, Hartalega will draw down some of its credit facilities. The higher
interest expense and depreciation cost are expected to weigh on its bottomline
in the near term. We cut FY15-16 EPS to factor in mainly (i) stronger US$
against RM (ii) higher interest expense and (iii) higher depreciation cost. This
reduces our target price which is based on 2-year historical P/E of 21x CY16.
We downgrade the stock to Hold. We prefer Kossan
