IJM on 'fishing expedition' for 1MDB power assets

KUALA LUMPUR: Construction group IJM Corp Bhd, which is on the lookout for power generation assets to venture into that sector, is on a “fishing expedition” to determine if it can acquire the power plants under 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

An executive close to the company said the best valuations would come from assets held by companies whose owners need of cash.

“1MDB fits that profile and that is why IJM is looking at a possibility of buying the assets if it makes commercial sense. There is no offer on the table or any board meeting slated to deliberate on the matter. The only board meeting is one that is scheduled two weeks more to announce the results.

“What IJM is doing now is essentially ‘fishing around’ to look for power assets such as those owned by 1MDB. If successful, IJM cannot absorb it alone but it will have to form a consortium,” the executive told StarBiz.

While IJM has not been in involved in any power projects before, it can acquire the expertise by leveraging on its strength in project management, said the executive. He thinks the company would be able to pull off the acquisition with its balance sheet and governance track record.

However, other players are also in the fray for 1MDB’s power assets such as utility giant Tenaga Nasional Bhd. It has also been speculated a Middle Eastern consortium is keen on taking over the fund’s power assets parked under Edra Global Energy Bhd.

1MDB’s option to unlock value in Edra Global is by listing it. This was why the Finance Ministry (MoF), which wholly owns 1MDB, had decided to drop the services of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd to act as adviser for the potential sale of Edra.

1MDB has a debt obligation payment of RM5bil due on Aug 31 this year. Of this, the bulk will go to cover the payment of a US$975mil term loan taken by 1MDB Energy Holdings Ltd. At the current exchange rate of 3.59 to the US dollar, the maturing term loan is valued at RM3.57bil

1MDB needs about RM5bil this year to meet its debt obligations. The amount largely is to cover the payment of a US$975mil term loan taken by 1MDB Energy Holdings Ltd, which falls due on Aug 31 this year. The other portion of the RM5bil obligation this year comes from interest cost totalling around RM1.4bil on all other outstanding loans that 1MDB has taken over the last five years.

Although 1MDB’s assets outstrip its liabilities, its financials are unsustainable due to the debt obligations.

1MDB has RM41.9bil in debt that was taken over the past five years as the company built up a portfolio of power and energy assets, as well as amassing prime land banks earmarked for future development.
