RM1bil to fight third wave of Covid-19

To stem the third wave of Covid-19 from extending into 2021, the government has allocated RM1bil for containment measures.

Of the amount, a total of RM318mil was allocated for the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand sanitisers.

Among the potential beneficiaries would be the listed companies that have previously announced plans to diversify into the production of PPE.

JOHOR BARU: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) has inked a memorandum of understanding with Honsin Apparel Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Prolexus Bhd, to allow an exchange of expertise and technology to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Niosh executive director Ayop Salleh said the signing marked a service collaboration between both parties to develop, strengthen and promote the development of national occupational safety and health.

He said the memorandum incorporates laboratory use for new products and test standard development, consultation services, scheduled educational lectures on the latest protective technologies, as well as information dissemination through seminars.

“As part of our joint efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and increase public awareness of face mask security features, Niosh and Prolexus’ research and development teams will also be organising training seminars on protection technologies for reusable fabric masks.

“Wearing a face mask is crucial for slowing the spread of the virus, along with other Health Ministry and World Health Organisation guidelines for maintaining physical distance and washing our hands regularly, ” Ayop said after the signing ceremony.

He said the collaborative effort was subsequent to the face mask tests conducted at Niosh advance laboratories on its ProXmaskTM.

“The ProXmaskTM has been recognised as a qualified reusable functional fabric mask and Honsin is proud to earn the distinction of using the ‘Niosh Tested’ logo in its advertisements and product packaging.

“This collaboration between us and Niosh will provide both parties with a chance to exchange expertise and technology on reusable face masks while helping the nation to combat the pandemic, ” he added.

He said wearing a face mask was considered a social duty and wearing a high-quality face mask was an individual responsibility for everyone’s safety.

“This is because Covid-19 victims may be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic, so the best prevention is to be well-prepared, ” he added.

Prolexus innovation and development manager Dr B. Harintharavimal said the company aspired to deliver qualified protective, functional and reusable face masks.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia slipped into negative territory at midday on Tuesday as glove stocks shed recent gains due to profit taking but technology and semiconductor stocks provided some respite.

Tech and semicon related stocks were mostly higher, with MPI up 20 sen to RM20.66, Prolexus 14 sen to RM1.91 and its warrants 12 sen to RM1.11, Vitrox 12 sen to RM13.60.

With all those fabric mask outside there, but only ProXmask got the NIOSH attention. It means, Prolexus is very serious with their product and their technology.

ProXmask could be the first fabric mask to get NIOSH attention.

DG: This is probably the start of a new wave

COVID-19 | Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia was probably experiencing a "new wave" as Covid-19 case numbers continued to climb.

"If we look at the chart, we have an increase in cases lately. That probably is the beginning of a new wave," he told a press conference today.

New Covid-19 case numbers reported today hit 260. The bulk of the cases (88) were detected in a jail in Kedah and was identified as the Tembok cluster, while another cluster in Sabah (74) involved only foreigners.

The number of new cases today was the highest registered since June 4. During the first wave of Covid-19 cases in March and April, daily figures were below 260 though at the time Malaysia's testing capabilities were below current levels.

Noor Hisham said the authorities were more experienced now in handling the Covid-19 outbreak but the onus was still on Malaysians to flatten the rate of infection by following government guidelines.

"So you can see the cases are increasing. If we can come together, we can make the impossible possible. We have done that before and we are going to do it again," he said.

The number of active Covid-19 cases today reached 1,334 which is at a level not seen since early June. Nine people died of Covid-19 in September, bringing the cumulative death toll to 136.
