Ahli Parlimen DAP Kulai, Teo Nie Ching mengecam rancangan UMNO cuba mengelak daripada membayar kos faedah dalam usaha menyelamatkan Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad (Utusan) yang akhirnya akan memberi kesan buruk kepada peraturan pasaran dan bursa saham Malaysia.

Beliau berkata, pengumuman Utusan yang difailkan di Bursa Malaysia pada 12 November lalu mendedahkan bagaimana UMNO merancang mengambil ‘Two Call Rights Issue’ boleh batal sehingga lebih 110 juta hak saham dan sekaligus mewajibkan parti itu menjalankan tawaran mandatori pengambilalihan (MO) serta membayar faedahnya.

Menurutnya, UMNO bagaimanapun semalam memohon pengecualian MO daripada Suruhanjaya Sekuriti Malaysia (SC).

“UMNO sedang mencari jalan supaya memperoleh pengecualian bagi membolehkan mereka menyokong usaha Utusan mengumpul dana tanpa menanggung kos faedah selanjutnya.

“Bagaimanapun Utusan tidak harus mengorbankan wang pembayar cukai sebagai pemegang saham minoriti.

“Jadi SC tidak harus memberikan mereka pengecualian daripada MO kerana ia akan menjejaskan hak pemegang saham minoriti dan merupakan penghinaan terhadap peraturan pasaran modal dan merendahkan ketelusan serta integriti Bursa Malaysia,” katanya dalam kenyataan.

Siling wad NICU Hospital Serdang runtuh

Beberapa kepingan siling di wad Unit Rawatan Rapi Neonatal (NICU) Hospital Serdang yang sedang dibaiki runtuh awal pagi ini, tetapi tiada sebarang kecederaan dilaporkan.

Pengarah Hospital Serdang Datuk Dr Ardi Awang berkata runtuhan yang berlaku pukul 1.30 pagi itu melibatkan kerosakan seluas kira-kira satu meter persegi.

"Bahagian berkenaan sebelum ini telah dikosongkan untuk kerja-kerja ubah suai dan membaiki kerosakan. Memang ada tanda-tanda kerosakan kerana itu pesakit telah dialihkan," katanya ketika dihubungi pemberita di sini hari ini.

Usaha Bernama untuk menjalankan tinjauan di wad berkenaan gagal selepas dihalang pengawal keselamatan.

Sebelum ini, beberapa kejadian runtuhan siling dan bumbung pernah dilaporkan berlaku di hospital berkenaan, termasuk pada 30 September lepas di wad bersalin melibatkan runtuhan siling.

Hospital yang menelan belanja RM690 juta itu mula beroperasi sejak Disember 2005 dan dibina khusus untuk menampung sekitar 570,000 penduduk Serdang, Putrajaya, Kajang dan Bangi. - Bernama, 14 November, 2013.

CAUGHT LYING: Chinese votes returning to BN is NOT TRUE - UMcedel survey

Claims that the Chinese had returned to Barisan Nasional in the Sungai Limau by-election last week is merely a myth, said political analysts from Universiti Malaya's research centre.

"Although more votes went to the BN in areas with Chinese majority, the additional votes cannot paint an absolute picture that the Chinese support have swung back to BN," said Dr Amir Saifudi, a researcher at UMcedel today.

"The number of Chinese voters are so few that even with the additional votes, it would not have affected the by-election results in any way," he added.

The Chinese electorate in Sungai Limau totalled 1,836 of the 27,000 voters.

However, few Chinese voters turned out to cast their ballots despite the RM2.25 million allocated by BN to Chinese schools in the area.

Of the 1,185 Chinese voters who came to cast their ballots, 75% of the votes went to BN.

"Based on our studies, the Chinese voting trend differs between the general and by-election.

"The Chinese view by-elections as insignificant while they feel that the general election is more important and every vote counts to affect change," Amir said in the university presentation.

It is shocking that the federal government is now considering imposing toll charges on motorcyclists when it knows very well that motorcycle is the cheap mode of transport for the low income group and that any toll imposition will burden the motorcyclists.

But Malaysians perhaps should not feel surprised at the government’s proposal because it is obvious that the BN government has totally abandoned its favourite slogan of People First after the May general election.

If the government is still committed to People First slogan, it will not implement the Goods and Services Tax next year when income level of ordinary Malaysians has not grown significantly over the last 5 years.

If BN government is committed to People First slogan, then there will certainly be no proposal from DBKL to impose sharp increase in property assessment rates in Kuala Lumpur starting January 1.

The assessment hike comes at a time when the government has also recently announced the withdrawal of sugar subsidy, RON 95 petrol price hike despite the fact that most wage earners’ have been complaining about the increase in prices of many goods.

While some city dwellers will face an unreasonable 20 to 30 % increase, there are areas where the increases will hit the ridiculous figures of 100 % to 250%.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor has tried to defend the assessment rate increase by saying that the rate has remained the same for the past 21 years and that there has been increase in property value.

Should increase in property value be the only criterion to consider when imposing assessment rate? Should not factors like the possible chain reactions of the rate hike, the financial burden on the people be taken into account?

Undoubtedly, property owners will pass on the assessment rate increases to their tenants by imposing higher rentals. Life will certainly be difficult for urban dwellers and businessmen who are residential and commercial property tenants.

It must be noted that while assessment rate has remained the same for the past 21 years, DBKL has been able to collect substantial increased revenue in assessment rates due to the big increase in number of properties in Kuala Lumpur.
