ASML's 4Q orders triple in sign of semiconductor industry revival.

Jan 24): ASML Holding NV orders more than tripled last quarter from the previous three months, in a sign that the semiconductor industry is resurgent.

Order bookings rose to a record €9.19 billion (RM47.26 billion) in the fourth quarter (4Q) from €2.6 billion in July to September, driven by demand for its most sophisticated machines, Europe’s most valuable technology company said in a statement on Wednesday.
ASML is the only company that produces equipment needed to make the most sophisticated semiconductors, and demand for its products is a bellwether for the industry’s health. Record orders for its top-of-the-line extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines show optimism among the biggest customers for the technology, including Intel Corp, Samsung Electronics Co and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC).
Artificial intelligence (AI), which requires massive amounts of computing power, is going to be a “big driver for our business and the business of our customers,” chief executive officer Peter Wennink said in an interview on Bloomberg TV.

Medical Segment Sets to Grow Further
Moving into 4Q23, the group is confident that the medical segment contribution will increase by 15-20% QoQ driven by higher sales to Edward (40% of 3Q23 revenue) and recovery in orders from Ambu (29% of 3Q23 revenue). We note that Supercomnet has been chosen by Edwards Lifesciences (market cap of above USD50bn) as the best quality supplier (more than 700 suppliers) and achieved gold status in 2023. Edward will be using more digital smart cable (from analog cable) for its products such as its inbuilt PCB Board somewhere in the middle of 2024. For Ambu, the growth will come from endoscopes, gastroscopes and colonoscope (US FDA approved in Sep-23).

Automotive to Fully Recover by 2Q24
Management shared that 4Q23 automotive contribution would remain flat QoQ but full recovery is expected to happen by either 1Q24 or 2Q24. We understand that Scomnet’s customer, Stellantis is evaluating Gurun’s potential to be a regional hub for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) for domestic and export markets. In essence, we believe the expansion of Stellantis in ASEAN (via Gurun, Kedah) will bode well for Scomnet.

In addition, Scomnet has been approached by a European automotive player to produce wire harness for Chrysler models in the US market. If successful, the first project is expected to begin in March or April 2024 and contribute around RM10-15mn sales per annum.

RHB Investment Bank kept its OVERWEIGHT stance on Transportation sector, as it expects trade recovery to materialise.

the research house said, the upswing in export momentum in November 2023, particularly in E&E products and palm oil-based items, validates the early signs of trade rebound.

“There is also growing evidence of improved trade activities from economic growth of China and regional economies.

Aside from that, the red sea crisis pushed certain freight rates higher.

Within the logistics sector, its top pick is Tasco Bhd (TASCO) for its diversified client base, business segments that will sustain its earnings base, and the integrated logistics services (ILS) tax incentives that offer a buffer against sector headwinds.

For the fourth quarter (4QFY22), the group posted a 2.43% drop in net profit to RM86.22 million, from RM88.36 million a year earlier, due to a decline in revenue and higher provision of deferred taxation.

Earnings per share for the quarter slipped to 2.33 sen from 2.64 sen previously, Inari’s filing showed.

Quarterly revenue fell 6.96% to RM336.18 million from RM361.32 million, as raw material supply constraints led to lower loading volume in its optoelectronics and generic business segments.

The semiconductor sector continues to be favoured by analysts, especially the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (Osat) providers.

The Osat companies have got it going with a strong sales pipeline and earnings growth prospect, anchored by their expansion roadmap and robust balance sheet, said TA Securities Research in its latest report.

“We also expect them to continue benefiting from the global structural growth in chip demand, alongside the ongoing acceleration in digitalisation and proliferation of secular technology trends like 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, Internet of Things, robotics and vehicle electrification,” it said.

It maintained its “overweight” stance on the technology sector.
