Tengku Zafrul began his career as a corporate finance executive in a merchant bank and subsequently left to join an international research house as an investment analyst and rose to be the director. He then became the advisor to the President of Tenaga Nasional Berhad prior to joining the investment banking department of a leading merchant bank.

Tengku Zafrul joined Avenue Capital Resources Berhad (formerly known as Avenue Assets Berhad) as an Executive Director in 2003 and he is presently the Group Managing Director. He is also the treasurer of Young Professionals Chamber of Malaysia (PROMUDA), Deputy President of University of Bristol Alumni Association and the executive secretary of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club.
