'It is extraordinary to me that the idea of buying dollar bills for 40 cents takes immediately with poeple or it doesn't take at all. It's like an inoculation. If it doesn't grab a person right away, I find that you can talk to him for years and show him records, and it doesn't make any difference, They just don't seem able to grasp the concept, simple as it is' - Warren Buffett
This article was published in 1984 based on a speech given by Warren Buffett at the Columbia University School of Business in honor of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd's book Security Analysis.
It was also in respond to Michael Jensen, a professor from Universitiy of Rochester that claims that market is efficient, there are no undervalued securities and Buffett's record is just a by product of luck.
I enjoy this article because it is well-written, easy to read, understand and one that truly capture the essence of value investing. It is an article that if you get it, it just makes perfect sense and logic that this is how investing is suppose to be.
This is a great read for anyone, whether you are a newbie to investing, a veteran or someone that keeps changing investing styles because none of them are working. This will clear out all the noise and makes you rethink what investing is all about. You will also get to learn how to think about probabilities and chances in investing.
In saying that, value investing might or might not be suitable for you. However if you get it, this article will not teach you how to get wealthy, but it will sets you in the right direction to start with.
