Tengku Azmil Joins CIMB Thai’s Board

Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz has been named the chairman and a director of CIMB Thai Bank with effect from July 19 following the retirement of Datuk Robert Cheim Dau Meng.

KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz has been named the chairman and a director of CIMB Thai Bank, following the retirement of Datuk Robert Cheim Dau Meng.

His appointment took effect on July 19, according to CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (KL:CIMB), which holds a 94.83% interest in CIMB Thai. Azmil is also a non-independent director of CIMB Group.

Azmil is currently the chairman of CelcomDigi Bhd (KL:CDB) and an independent non-executive director of Sime Darby Bhd (KL:SIME).

Formerly the chief investment officer at Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Azmil served Khazanah in various senior positions, including deputy managing director (deputy MD) and executive director of investments from 2011 to 2022.

He was also the MD and chief executive officer of Malaysia Airlines from 2009 to 2011, having previously held the position of executive director and chief financial officer.

Prior to that, he was in multiple leadership roles at Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd and PricewaterhouseCoopers in London and Hong Kong.

Shares of CIMB Group closed up 22 sen or 3.05% at RM7.43 on Wednesday, giving the banking group a market capitalisation of RM79.5 billion.
