KUALA LUMPUR: The demand for unrealistic salary and benefits are the top cited reasons given by employers on why it is hard for fresh graduates to gain employment these days.
This was followed by a poor command of the English language, being choosy about the job or company, poor communication skills and an overall poor attitude.
This finding was revealed at the launch of the JobStreet.Com Salary Guide launched at the Multimedia University (MMU) in Cyberjaya, Selangor today.
JobStreet.com Regional Communications head Simon Si said in a survey conducted by JobStreet.com last month, 68 per cent of the respondents said fresh graduates are asking too high a salary for first jobs.
“The survey disclosed that 60 per cent of fresh graduates expect a salary of RM 3,500 for their first job while 30 per cent want to be paid as high as RM6,500 in order to live comfortably. This means that there is a gap between what companies are willing to pay and what the candidates want to be paid," he said.
Si said the JobStreet.Com Salary Guide, which was extracted from jobs advertisements published on JobStreet.com Malaysia in 2015 until 2016, would be able to give an indication of what is the average salaries offered by companies to help fresh graduate understand the job market better.
"The actual salaries for various positions, of course, varies based on many factors such as market demand and supply, the academic grades and acquired skills of the candidates and the compensation and benefit policies of the hiring company,” he added.
"Having said that, we also have to look at living expenses today. I think what needs to happen is for the industry to come together with the understanding of the reality of the salary situation which is perceived as inadequate by many fresh graduates," said Si.
In addition to launching the salary guide, MMU and JobStreet.com also launched a Career Corner, an upskilling initiative to develop a better talent pool for the job market and industries based on current economic trends in Malaysia.
The Career Corner serves as a one-stop centre for students to prepare themselves for their first job. During the event, student ambassadors and career services counsellors were available to support and guide students to better prepare themselves.
MMU Human Capital Management senior director Mohd Amin Abdullah Sani said the guide is an important tool for graduates to venture in the 21st century market force.
“For this era, MMU has prepared its graduates to be, not merely as a job seeker but also a job creator. Thus the Salary Guide is absolutely important to ease the matching and communication of job opportunities between jobseekers and employers,” he said.

There is 1 general twisted mentality thinking: living cost up, and so salary must up.
More correct statement is living cost up, salary up, job delivery quality also up. What i observe now is quite some graduates demand (high) salary using the environmental excuse but forget to convince employer how they can contribute toward company productivity and how they differ from the other job applicants...

Yes, its about creating value for the company, not complaining about the environment.

salary increase aldy... I remembered in 2007 - I was only getting RM 7200 (I had about 13 year experience.
Now fresh aldy got 3500.....not bad...
Poor comment of English - this is the creation of BN!! If employers go and engage those from international school, worst. Those are spoilt brat.
Nvm about the English, it can be trained in the working environment. Wat we can do this BN around? Good govt school, our colours are no longer allow to study after UPSR. We only can either get into lousy SMK (worst - all in BM), independent Chinese school (yes, English issue - but students are hardworking and willing to learn, quite intelligent) or international school (for spoilt brat, rich ppl children, talk cock sing song very good).

my opinion of fresh graduates....I think they are very realistic and down to earth.
don't blame the young when the older generation could not produce a better Malaysia.

stockmanmy.
education - needs to be well supported by government.
How can all subjects in BM? How to improve in English Language??
My sons have to study Chinese Independent school. He can write excellent English, just like me. However, he can't converse very well. I am not worried about that, communication can be trained at work place.
But my 2nd son;s result is not very good, unable to get into science stream. He took art and commerce stream, all are in Chinese language. So I need to send him to English Lang tuition.
We as parent need to do so much. It just is the stupid BN change all subjects to BM!!! and those leaders children all send to foreign countries for their education!!!

I just saying the survey is done by employers to put the blame on the young.
My opinion......the young is practical, down to earth and realistic. Graduates from good universities are happy to work for <$3000, and those in accounting firms work 100 hour week.

stockmanmy --- blame on BN!!!
who convert English language on those non language subjects to BM?
BM can use where other than Malaysia and Indonesia? The language can't use anywhere!
If learn Arab language I don't mind, bcos can use in Arab countries. There are so many Arab countries can make living!
Even Chinese independent school wants to use English as medium to those non-language subjects, gamon also want to interfere and wanted to shut down the schools.
Those are independent school, operate using donation and fund rising exercise. Those teachers salaries are also not high compare to SMK teachers and they do not have retirement benefit compared to those teachers in SMK.
But our stupid gamon wants to interfere! Fking none of their business.... They don't even want to recognize UEC cert into public universities and want to interfere.
