YANGON, Sept. 16 -- The death toll from Myanmar's flooding has risen to 226, with 77 people still missing, the Information Team of Myanmar's State Administration Council reported late Monday.

The floods have affected dozens of townships across the country, killing 128,344 animals, the report said. A total of 438 shelters were set up for flood victims, it added.

The affected regions and states included Kayah, Kayin, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, Shan, Ayeyarwady, and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, it said.

As of Monday, the floods had also damaged 2,116 houses, 117 departmental buildings, 1,040 schools, 386 religious buildings, and submerged 643,081 acres of crops, the report said.

The widespread flooding in the Southeast Asian country has been caused by heavy rains triggered by Typhoon Yagi and a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, the report said.
