General comments and views on my investments

As I am a little bored this past few weeks with some free time, I decided to write about my portfolio. I know that the returns/performance of my portfolio will seem really laughable compared to many people, just look at the latest stock pick results, so many people recording returns of more than 30% in just a span of 2 months, really impressive. However, my intention is to have opinions on my portfolio be it good or bad comments and to share my investing experience. I have also learned alot here ( I started reading i3 4 years ago) due to the many good articles published by people such as KC, intelligentinvesting, GainInvestor, Calvin, Felicity and many others and also the useful comments/info provided by many on the individual stock forums.

Please not, I am not here to promote any stocks/ask for followers/offer tips/move stocks/subscriptions/trading channels, there are many others here who can do better write-ups/have more knowledge/influence than me, please follow them.

My portfolio started in late 2014 with an an initial capital of 4 figures. Any excess savings that I have had since then have been added into the portfolio. As I am still a student, the fresh capital injections are often lumpy and inconsistent. Hence, I opted to calculate my returns using the IRR function in excel to take into account the timing discrepencies of my capitals. My intended returns from my equity investment here is at 15% per annum.  The current IRR stands at 12.1%, excluding any dividend income. If dividends are taken into account at a ~4% annual yield, the total annualised returns be around my targeted returns. The current ROI of the portfolio stands at 9.7%.

My investing journet has not been a nice ride at all. I remember allocating my initial investments to just 3 stocks due to limited capital, Padini, Sasbadi and Matrix. Sasbadi was just listed then and was already trading high above its IPO price. However, I thought that it was a great business as it was one of the largest players in the Malaysian book market where demand is always relatively inelastic due to the  focus families put on education nowadays and the introduction of the 1 Malaysia Book Voucers. I bought it at 1.57 (IPO: 1.19), thinking that could hold it for a 2-5 years before realising any gains. To my surpirse, it continued shooting up and I disposed off it at 2.18 a few months later, only to see it going up to 2.6 and continue trending upwards after its bonus issues.

I was left holding Padini and Matrix, I used to proceeds from Sasbadi to buy into CIMBC50etf which tracked H shares in HK as I thought that H shares looked undervalued. Well, the market didn't seem to agree with my view. The etf plunged soon after following China's stock market rout. Padini fell badly too, due to its poor performance and the unrelentless downgrades by analysts. Matri'x performance was nothing to shout about too as the property market outlook was dimmed. I remember looking my portfolio's total return of -30 to -40% for that few months. I then learned that the markets & analysts can be brutal, and that was not even in a really bearish market/crash.

However, I held on to my shares. I did the same thing for my unit trusts at FSM during the taper tantrum in 2013/2014 (I started UT earlier than Bursa) where many of my funds fell more than 20% as most of them were concentrated in the Asia region.

TBC. ( Writing a post is longer than I thought, spent almost 2 hours just on this, salute to those who does it regularly).

A simple table is placed below showing my current holdings taken directly from broker's table, date of purchase, share sales/purchases not shown. Thinking of writing up about each individual share next time, that will certainkly take a long long time.
