Feeling blue over present state of the nation by CAPT (R) OO KWAN HUAT Butterworth

I USED to take part in the Merdeka Day parades and celebrations when I was in school and later while I was serving in the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The feeling of pride and patriotism was evident on the faces of the rakyat during these events.

I feel sad that over the last few years, I seem to have lost these feelings. Merdeka Day has lost its significance as far as I am concerned and I cannot help but ask myself why.

As an ex-serviceman who played a part in the fight against the communists, I should be proud that this country is independent and free from external influences. This country is abundant with natural resources and free of the calamities of nature.

At one time, our education system produced high-quality human resources and we were moving steadily to become a high-income, developed country. The people of different races lived in harmony and were tolerant of one another.

What went wrong? How did we end up in the present state? Instead of marching towards becoming a developed nation, we are moving backwards so much so we are losing out to neighbouring countries that used to be way behind us and were once considered third world countries.

Our education system is in such a sorry state that our graduates are finding it difficult to get employed because of the negative perception of the quality of our universities.

The people are becoming more and more intolerant and divided. Racial integration among the younger generation is almost non-existent.

Our economy seems to be going downhill too. How can a country with an abundance of natural resources end up like this?

Our ringgit is losing value compared to other currencies and its purchasing power has shrunk considerably.

Considering all the negatives above, it is no wonder I am feeling blue this Merdeka Day.

i feel exactly the same...but i tell you the reason which i think your brain and malays brain still dont get it....or denying it subconsciously thinking you can get best of both worlds

its because of segregation of races at primary school
...................................................

childhood plays an important factor for integration..even among siblings and friends

as long as chinese goes to chinese school and malays to their religious school...and asrama on secondary schools stage..

this country is certainly doomed

first and foremost ask the past and present MALAYSIAN POLITICIANS N MEDIAS!!! they are meddlesome creatures living happily in Malaysia! from small issue trying to create havoc....trying to be HEROES! educations play very important roles...WHY NOT SWITCH BACK 2 GOOD DAYS LIKE THE YEARS OF 60'S N 70'S...from there u can see all races mixing freely with one and others?

I think the voices or feelings of Pessimism by some in Malaysia recently is overdone. It's Merdeka 2019, we have survived 62 year. Now with less corruption (I believe the PH government is sincere about this), Malaysia is moving toward a brighter future. It's good that in New Malaysia we speak out when things are wrong, but should not be overly pessimistic.

PH has been doing well...but where it is critical they failed...mainly on education (retard Maszlee) and religious/race sensitivities (zakir naik)....

Such a failure .......

......to diagnose a person with toxic racism in mind

Racism is a symptom of psychological ill-health.

It is a sign of a lack of psychological integration, a lack of self-esteem and inner security.

Psychologically healthy people with a stable sense of self and strong inner security are not racist, because they have no need to strengthen their sense of self through group identity.

They have no need to define themselves in distinction to — and in conflict with — others.

Scientifically there is no biological basis for dividing the human race into distinct "races."

Reassuringly- all schoolers- a must- that fundamentally, there are no races — just one human race- called homo sapiens

Let's go along with Anwar to trust Tun M that he will hand over power once the time is right ( we can debate when till the cows come home but we just have to trust Tun M). On education, even the United States face problems when many of the white children are not interested in maths & science. That's why Asian are doing well in their Universities and the silicon valleys. Let's also give time to those who emphasize too much on religious education that they will realize that only maths & science can bring them progress in this modern world. All these call for patience.

Sejarah has failed to promote nationalist agenda....

........missing the elephant in the room.....STUDENTS fail to learn one of the key lesson about history of mankind....

And fail to learn the bad consequences from extreme racism:

1. Progression to second stage: ENMITY TOWARDS OTHER GROUPS

In order to further strengthen their sense of identity, members of a group may develop hostile feelings toward other groups. The group may become more defined and cohesive in its otherness to — and in its conflict with — other groups.

2. Leading to incoherent split personality: act benevolently towards members of their own group, but be cruel and heartless to anyone outside it.

When members of a group take the step of withdrawing empathy from members of other groups, limiting their concern and compassion to their fellows. They may act benevolently towards members of their own group, but be cruel and heartless to anyone outside it.

3. Progression into malignant third stage (the most dangerous and destructive extreme of racism)

People may project their own psychological flaws and their own personal failings onto another group, as a strategy of avoiding responsibility and blame. Other groups become scapegoats, and consequently are liable to punished, even attacked or murdered, in revenge for their alleged crimes. Individuals with strong narcissistic and paranoid personality traits are especially prone to this strategy, since they are unable to admit to any personal faults, and are especially likely to demonize others.
